Hey guys, I just picked up a 1963 econline pickup with a "rebuilt" Straight six 170 in it. It has a mallory distributor with electronic ignition, looks like new plugs and wires, everything looks fresh. Here's my problem, I have been driving it for the past week and now this weekend a problem surfaced. When Im cruising anywhere beetween 50 and 60 after about 30 minutes it starts to feel like it misfires. Only for a couple seconds and then it will go back to driving fine for a few minutes and then starts the process all over. It hasn't out right made it die, but it just keeps doing that over and over. I bought a new fuel filter and I'm going to put that in tonight. Any other Ideas?
Have you checked the gas tank for any foreign material? In the "old days" if someone pi**** you off enough you put a ping pong ball in his gas tank. The car idled great but every once in a while the ball would get ****ed onto the line then when you let off of the gas the ball would float free for a while. Then plug the line again. Not that I've ever done this. I suppose that there could be many things in the tank that could cause this.
I had this same thing on my 383 Chrysler I checked everything fuel sock fuel filter, plugs wires carb issues. Nothing helped, but I did not check the cap because I hadreplaced a few months prior, guess what. Look at the center electrode on the underside of the cap mine was half gone. Put the old cap which I saved and it drove like new again. Hope it's that simple Matt
Maybe a slight vapor lock at the tank (I think mattrod68 was implying this). Maybe the tank vent is partially blocked. I had a motorcycle that would do the same.
Wouldn't a ping pong ball float? Plus I think someone would have a hard time shoveing it down that tiny hole in the gas fill. Haha
Read my post again Sparky. You will see that it says"In the old days" Back when they made REAL cars there was no such thing as unleaded gasoline and filler pipes did not have "tiny holes".Jeesh!
I had a like problem in my bigg*** motorhome and it turned out to me the module in the distributer. The confounded thing that takes the place of good ole' reliable POINTS. I drove from Eugene Ore. to Wall Drug thinkin it was the egr valve and it wasnt. Friggen new cars. God's car has points
Were physics different as well? Because I'm still trying to get around the ball floating. I'm just ribbin ya granpa. But alas it sounds alot like the sugar in the gas tank myth.
Well it was a fuel filter problem in case anyone is still wondering. Thanks for the responses, and the humor. -J
