Forgive my ignorance, I have been absorbed into customs for the last few years, and my knowledge of rods is limited to osmosis. Since I have inherited some interesting parts lately, I started to think that some day I'd build a tall T. I met a fellow who horsetrades alot of T parts and has a frame that he is willing to just about give me to get out of his way. Could this be be used for a rod or am better off with something else? I must admit it looked a little flimsy. I know little about it other than it's a T frame, year/model unknown. Thanks for taking the time to field a rookie question, I'm just a little hesitant to drag something home that I'll never be able to use..... If no good, what should I be on the lookout for?
as long as your using the "t" engine any more power than that and you will deffinetly have to do alot of work to it. it would probably be easier and cheaper to make a new frame.
Pshaw to the naysayers, I am gonna do it. Of course, it's just gonna be a 216 six, but I figger it'll be alright. There's some posts about this from awhile ago, so try a search for it. I thought I had them saved in my favorites, but I don't. Jay
tie it down on a jig table and box it ,then add some cross members where ever your power train will sit ,a 3 inch wide 14 guage 12 ft long 2 pcs will box it complete, not much t******* even,i dont have pics of mine but it sits a chevy six and powerglide,, weld the factory rivet crossmembers, at the joints, this frame is quite stiff now and ready for motor and ****** do it!!
Just last month I stopped to look at a '26 T Touring that was for sale. Had the stock T frame a Jag rear and standard dropped I beam front axle, looked odd since it hadn't been boxed. Boxed with truss rods (like a 1920's Bentley) would stiffen it up nicely.
Thanks for the thoughts. I gave the guy some old cheapy jack stands from my Goodwill pile and some shrink wrap I had left over and said it was mine. I plan on running a Ford 6 that a buddy let me keep from his SBC upgrade. He even through in the Clifford intake and some cool old Ford 6 headers. That's kinda' what got the old noggin' thinking. Hoping to build a total budget ride, so I'm gonna' git' it. Any other sugggestions are appreciated..... Justin, got a buddy wsho just picked up a 61 Burb and may be looking for some parts, you got anything that new around the casa? Thanks, guys......
sorry don't have any 60's burb parts, if i did i think my dad would steal them, he just got a 64 suburban about a month ago. there was a early 60's panel in the junkyard off of mission in escondido, that would probably be good for parts if it's still there. how's the ford coming, did you ever get the 3x2's to run good? anyways you probably seen this already but this is one of my new favorite's Mikey's T, thought it would be some good inspiration for you on the new project.
Justin - Fords coming along good. I have actually taken to running around the neighborhood a bit. Learning what needs to be tweaked, etc. Found most of my tri-power issues were do to my antique coil, replaced that with a new one and wow.... Still would like get it optimize, but now I have a rear spring issue. Maybe gonna go a 4 link, dunno yet.... Maybe I'll get out to that yard in the next week, gonna be on vacation. I know he needs a hood. Mikey sure nailed the stance on that T, that's just what I'm thinking. Long way to go though, wanna get the 51 done first, but never to early to start collecting parts. Got a cooll old T column today, already reraked for floor mount steering. Oh boy
I plan on boxing mine and making up an "X" member for the center. Gonna run an anemic 239 Pontiac flathead 6, 3 speed in it. 90 hp...Woooo Hoooo! At least I won't have any doors to worry about popping open when the rails twist.
A quick note, Mikey's car is on "A" rails. As a matter of fact the only thing "T" on that car is the body. Not to say it cant be done. I am building a modified on "T" rails I boxed, and they seem very strong. I wouldn't worry too much. I'd do it. Heres another shot of Mikeys car just for kicks Later Harell
word up....t frames make excellent magazine racks.they are probably the free-est hot rod parts you will find, the reason is they ****.you could build a sick frame from box tubing with WAY less h***le.
[ QUOTE ] here ya go.........NO IT CANT BE DONE [/ QUOTE ] I thought the Green Bean had a box tube frame... or does it have an original Model T frame from the twenties that has had 200 man hours in it to make it look like a box tube frame? Sam.
Thanks for the perspectives, gonna take the T frame, worse comes to worse I'll practice my welding on it.
