Ok, my cousin needs money and has offered a '67 327 with double hump heads and less than 2K on a rebuild which included new rings, bearings, and an RV cam. First question is, would anyone else pay $500 for it? Second question, will it bolt up in my '51 chevy in place of the 305 (also with RV cam and 600 Edelbrock) that is currently in it without modifications (it is my daily and I will have ONE weekend to get it swapped)? The bellhousing is '47 Chevy pickup, with Muncie three-speed and Borg-Warner overdrive. I am pretty certain that the ****** Headers will bolt up. As a follow-up, how much more seat-of-the-pants can I expect from this swap, if any? Thanks for the help.
5 seems a pretty good price, if you are confident the engine runs good. It will bolt right in, dont think you are going to notice a huge difference in power though.
If it is a straight swap for the 305, you are in business. And yes, you will definitely feel a seat of the pants difference. 327's can be very nice little engines with some minor work, rev like a race car, and can be built to close to 400hp with Camel Humps (this would involve some work from your setup like a more agressive cam, minor headwork, lighter pistons, etc., but nothing exotic at all). In current trim, it should likely make better compression/power than the typical 305. Your carb is a good start (600-650cfm) for that engine too if your cousin's isn't included. I would recommend switching that ****** though to a 4 speed Muncie or equivalent manual. They rev so well you will want to take advantage of that power increase over a wider ratio setup.
Thanks for the info guys. There really is nothing like this community for quick answers to life's hot-rodding questions. Now maybe I can get this swap done before the roundup next year. Mine was the flat yellow '51 chevy with skirts and sun visor. Next year I can proudly open the hood!
yep it'll fit but remember on a rebuild that any taper in the bore or wore cyl bore and the rings will never seat. i was always leary of just freshened motors. motorworks.com had 5.0 chev. motors on overstock for 990.00 as of last friday. they have a warranty also, your call on that tho
Would the camel hump heads have mounting bosses on the front surface, like the 305 would? Just in case he has accessories screwed to them. Does the 327 have the same starter bolt configuration? Those straight/staggered always confused me.
most camel humps wouldnt have the mounting holes for the brackets on the front of em.. Either way price is right i'd scoop it up 327's are a nice motor
Around here 10 or 15 years ago. there were lots of 327s avaliable in the wrecking yards that had bores worn or bored out .060+ that you couldn't give away. Almost all went to the s****per. Even though this engine you are talking about has new rings, it might not have a good ring seal due to wear, and not enough meat left to bore it out any further. I also think you should be cautious until you know the dimensions in the bore.
