I cannot remember what year Chevy vans have that real nice neutral switch that bolts to the pan bolts. Anybody remember? Need one for a job I'm doing. Thanks in advance, Al
Ron Francis made a neutral safety switch that bolted to the pan and used the Chevy switch but I don't think GM ever made one that bolted on the pan. The switch was originally mounted on the steering column. Ron Francis
67 to 71 series 20 Vans are what you are looking for. Two different ones used, one for the T350 and one for the T400s. Hard to find now days. A Lokar one may be the easiest solution. Have a rebuilt T350 one that I spent hours trying to get working on my SP400, but the pattern is off. Canuck PS: if anyone has a spare switch for a TH400 and wants to work a deal, let me know.
Yes, the late 60's and early 70's Chevrolet/GMC vans and some step body trucks used the neutral start switch on the transmission. The Turbo 400 used a bracket to hold the switch and the Turbo 350 actually had two mounting points cast into the side of the transmission case. I bought a NOS switch off eBay a few months back for about 30 dollars. I have the Turbo 400 in my 32 roadster ( and the bolt on neutral start switch ) and got it for a spare. I can get the GM part # if you need it. It is still in the red/white/blue GM box. I have a few older, used spares I have gathered up over the years ... so I could take a photo and post it if needed. I do not have any spare brackets ... just switches. By the way ... last time I priced a new switch at the Chevy dealer ... it was over a hundred dollars
The switch I have has the numbers "X168" stamped on it and "made in USA Remy". The base is stamped "Made in Canada LN" and "ICR". Tried plotting the shift quadrant of the trans (SP400) angles between gears and the angles between connections on the switch and total travel. No Way do they agree. Know the switch came out of a GM van years ago. ***ume that with the difference beetween the trans and switch contact points that it must be for a T350. If I am wrong, any help would be appreciated. Anyhow, here is a picture of the switch type that 41hemi is looking for: The silicon is removed from the back of the switch. When I tried to test the switch, it didn't work, so thinking I had nothing to loose, I cleaned off the silicon and gently pried open the tabs. Cleaned out the dirt and cleaned the contacts and carefully re ***embled. Works 100%. The contacts were not burned, just oxidised and dirtly. So if you have one of these switches that doesn't work this may be a solution for you.
I happen to have the Echlin and Standard electrical parts illustration books here, and there's nothing like that, so most likely this is OEM only...which you probably already know. It might be worth trying a parts house that carries Delco tuneup stuff.
I had a 72 van once, the switch bolted on the trans down at the linkage but I can't remmber exactly how,it had neutral safty and backup lights in same switch.
'74-'76 G & P series vans listed a part #1994168, matching the last three digits to what you found on your switch. It was listed as a neutral safety and B/U lamp switch but it's been discontinued from GM for some time. But the GM number might help you cross it to another aftermarket vendor.
