Rancheros get it in spades, and not just the El Camino thing. I was at the drag track with my '65 Ranchero several years ago, when this mealy looking guy approaches and tells me how nice it looks. So far, so good... Then he asks me if it was one of the Rancheros that started out as a two door wagon. Excuse me?

"Oh yeah, about half of the Rancheros were originally 2 door wagons, because Mountain Bell ordered like 30,000 of them, and then cancelled the order. So Ford had all these wagons that they couldn't sell, so they were all converted to Rancheros so they would sell."

Now, I'm not going to step one toe into this one, because pointing out all the dozens of things that make this story impossible would have taken up more time than I had in the staging lanes, and I was coming close to my next run. So I just said, "Really? this is the first time I've ever heard of that! Gee!"

So the guy walks off all happy that he informed me of this, and gets into his race car about five cars in front of me. It's a 70 Mustang fastback in about the same shape as Joe Dirts' Daytona, with a 351 Cleveland, tunnel ram, two 750 double pumpers, nutty cam of some sort, open headers, 4 speed, and who knows what gears.

He goes for his run, launches like he's towing a trailer, and runs a 13.90. My converted 2 door wagon with it's '70 302, Edelbrock heads, Comp 268H cam, and C4 with 3:25 gears runs a 13:45 while the expert is watching from the starting line. Then he asks me what he should do to make his car faster. I tell him to ditch the tunnel ram and use one of his Holleys on a single 4V intake, and he gets all huffy about how he tried that, and he picked up 3 10ths with the t-ram. So I told him I didn't know much more that that about Clevelands (which was sort of true) and to ask the Cleveland guys that run in the 10s with goliath-sized '71-'73 Mustangs and Torinos. Doubt he ever did.

The radiator "cap" on our "A" has been referred to as a duck many times. (quail)

Once in high school we ran across a car my dad had built and sold before I was born. Started looking at it hot and heavy since we hadn't seen it in roughly 20 years. Guy comes over kind of pissy for our looking at it. Tells us his best friend built the car 5 years ago and he's the second owner. We keep looking and telling him dad built it.
Sealed the deal when he told him how a few pieces used to be when he had it, guy who owned it now admitted that we were correct. He was then pretty pissed off at his buddy when he found out how old the car was.
Exciting to me to see the rod my parents built in a trailer house and 8x10 shed. They had to cut the end of the shed off to get the car out when done.

see, here's the catch. he didn't say how many times it would do it, or for how long. :D

I figure it might, with enough nitrous....at least once. we can try it, but You gotta pick up the pieces.

I had my '56 Merc at the local car show. I started the 312 y-block which had a street/strip Isky cam. Guy sticks his head in and says man it runs rough. I think you really need a tune up. These used to run very smooth. I told him it had a cam and he repeated his advice. I put it drive and left.

  11. I did a chevy showdown here in town a couple of weeks ago with my 56....had a guy and his buddy ask if its safe to race a car that sits that high???...........being the smartass I have always been I said "Hell yeah,Its a mudbog racer"

I had someone come up to my '40 sedan at a show and say how his grandpa built "this very car" (and he was positive it was it) back in the early 60's and how he coulda ended up with it blah blah blah.... I sincerely apologized and told him I built it and pulled the body out of a field in 2002; the last license plate that was on it was from '54...

Yeah, that one gets me the most. That and telling me directly to put in different seats or some other crap. I don't go to a lot of shows anymore because the mean free distance between idiots is way too small.

My Cousin has a 1968 Dodge pu that he put together when he was 16. After he painted it, he wheeled it outside so it would dry faster. Some guy stops and wants to buy the seat out of it. Here the truck is, sitting here with wet paint and a freshly recovered seat and he thinks he is going to get it. By the way, The guy thinks this place is a salvage yard just because my uncle has a few cars on his place.

At a local cruise night many years ago with my chopped and channeled A coupe. A young boy is looking in the car and says to his mother "Wow it's small in there." The mom replies with authority; "Yes, people were shorter back then."

  22. Not really a dumb thing but I used to get "Is that a clone?" a lot when I was showing my '66 GT 350H Shelby. Or why do they call it a 350? Is that the engine. Just uninfromed.

I had a guy standing looking at my doors with a puzzled look on his face for about 5 minutes. He then told his wife I must think its a damn general lee with the doors welded up. I have poppers that are electric, keypad. He was looking down the door line telling her, look in there see the welds, WTF. I hit the button and popped it open on his forehead.I figured he'd get mad, but I'm 6'4" around 300, and he was smaller then my 12 year old. LOL.
