What's the perfect chop for a Model A pick-up?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Fordor Ron, May 10, 2009.

  1. Making progress beating out my Model A cab and I am almost ready to tack it together. What's the perfect chop? Any pic's or advice? I did a search but didn't find any info on trucks specifically.

    Thanks in advance...

  2. This probably isn't what you are looking for but,I like his chop. There's so little room in Pick-up cabs,so more than 4" is too much,IMO.

  3. If this is more what you have,i've always thought they looked best unchopped...

If you can, how about waiting until the body is on the frame; your seat, steering column and pedals are mocked up; and then sit in it and decide see how much of a crew cut you can stand? Perhaps down to say 3" above your head for big "bump" room? Dont forget to factor in a head liner. Gary

I have been driving my old Ford pickup every day for 17 years, often on 3 and 4 hundred mile trips and the cab is tiny and cramped.

You will be happier if you do not chop it.
........unless you are one of those truck owners who only drive it short distances on rare occasions

The problem with pickups is leg room not head room. Im 6’ 6’’ so I only chopped my 31 p/u cab 2’’ but even with a very thin seat leg room sucked. But I had over 8’’s of room over my head.

On my 31 I chopped it 4.5 in the front 4 in the back and it has a 3" channel. I'm 6'3" and I have no problems fitting into it height wise. One thing I did do to make room for my long legs is lengthened the cab 4" it was easier than I thought it would be and made a world of difference. If you like there are pictures of the process on my profile, never mind the weird "bubble top", someone did this in the 60's, I have since cut out the center of the roof and I am in the process of framing it out and making a canvas top. I'll have new pics up when its done being repainted and the new top is in. I hope this helps you some.

  9. I agree with gnichols...Too many guys are just going for a certain look instead of driving comfort.

  10. These trucks are killer. I should have said 30-31 body style. I agree though, the earlier trucks look better unchopped. The 30-31's look top heavy unchopped for some reason to me.

5ft 7 inches :) It has the original seat riser and seats and I still have plenty of room. The key is no channeling! :)

I took 2 1/2" out of my sedan. I found that to be the best for me, getting in and out so I didn't hit my head. I ran a piece of tape across the door opening at what I thought I might want to chop out and then I got in and out until my head didn't hit the tape.

Comfort or style? Hmmmm, let's see. How about just do what you like instead of asking for everyone else's opinion.

  18. That's what I'm screamin'... Proportion is everything on a rod & I'm constantly amazed how many people don't have an eye for it.

  20. Also, what's the best place to make the cut? I'm leaning toward a 2" chop and it looks like the best place to cut is right below the top hinge?

Excellent advice here. And don't forget to check the sight lines. It is possible to have plenty of headroom, but not be able to see out very well due to the depth of the header above the windshield.

I like 3-4 myself. Just not as comfortable for a taller guy at anything more

Yes, as much as you can mock it up ahead of time, the better off you'll be. A lot depends on your height & if you're gonna channel the thing. I chopped mine 3" & channeled it 5." I'm only 5'9" & I had to sacrifice my thick seat cushions to get the right sight line. Now my ass will suffer. If you're not channeling it & you're not real tall, you should have pretty liberal parameters.

  24. My old 29.... forget what I chopped it. This was about 7 or 8 years ago I think. On the back panel, I chopped the bottom as to put the rear window where I needed it...but I'm little!

Think it was 5 1/2... anymore and it is a pain in the ass to drive, looks cool....but not pratical.

I like no chop on a fendered truck...3 to 4 on no fenders...

  26. I'm not gonna channel it and I'll probably run it with the long bed.

If that's the plan...do not chop it. It'll look way out of proportion. Ya gotta channel the cab and shorten the bed to get the proportions back once chopped.

I agree with this. IMO a channel worse then a chop on these small cabs. I'm 6' and I have head room with a 6" chop but leg room is going to be tight with a 4" channel. I think a lot depends on how much you are going to drive it. If it's just a local crusier you can live with it being cramped.
