I knew it wouldnt last but I thought I could baby it.I was wrong. Stuck it in 3rd and g***ed on it and boom.3rd gear blew up and took all the teeth off the cluster.Got it home and pulled it out and called about a tko500 they said there was no warrenty and did not think it would last.Im putting my spare t-5 in for now. What can I use that will take it?Will a tko hold up? Thanks Joe
You broke your TKO500 or a T5? It sounds like the TKO is the one you wasted, there are gear sets available for the TKO that are designed to handle much more power. Cheaper than a whole new trans too.
It's a hot rod you're supposed to break **** At least you didn't baby it like Keith does with the roadster.
Yea arron it made it 46 mile. It is a t-5 but tko vendors told me their ******s wouldnt take it either

Really? I guarantee you I am making more than 500 hp, and my Tremec TKO has survived. Granted it's a 3550 TKO built by Mike Fortes, but still.
I've got a GM world cl*** T5 in my '33, with an engine that dyno'd at 517 hp, and I lay on it hard.....and often. I've put 40,000 miles on it so far without any problems, although I've gone through 2 Centreforce dual friction clutches, a driveshaft and two 31 spline ford axles. Switched to Currie axles, no more problems.......so far
A TKO should hold that much power with no problem...lots of OT Mustangs run them with lots of power, on a dragstrip, with slicks, and they survive a long time. They also make a G-Force T5 gear kit that is supposed to make the stronger than a TKO with very little helical cut to the gears. It is pricey though.
Primer31 they were pissed because we were supposed to go to KC at 5:30 this morning.Flat ernie it had a stock camero shifter on it at the time but since it was already in third I didnt think it would matter.
Ah, but it does matter. With your power, I would run a TKO, but if you run a stock T5 ever again, ditch the stock shifter quickly. It may have already damaged the dogs and shift forks before you ever hit it hard... Biggest weak link for the T5 bar none.
Sounds like a big case of CYA to me, TKO probably told you it would not handle it because if they claimed that their trans would hold 500 hp then everyone that had 499.99 hp & broke a trans would scream ****** murder & probably sue. Stock T5's are pretty weak, 2nd & 3rd gear are like gl***, a stock 305 can break them. A TKO should handle what you throw at it within reason, if you plan on side stepping the clutch off of every light you just may break it. Drive it like a halfway normal hot rodder (and only occasionally side step it LOL) then you should be fine.
TKO-500 is supposed to be rated to 500lb/ft TKO-600 is supposed to be rated to 600lb/ft Best T-5 is 335lb/ft - most are 300lb/ft or less Stock 305 should not break a T5 - no doubt there are stories of them breaking, but I will point you back to shifter and other issues that Borg-Warner probably could've done better. 3rd gear is "broken" by missed shifts and over-shifting due to the stock crummy shifter. Mustang boys use the T5 to about 400hp, then switch to TKO...
I seriously doubt it was TTC that said this directly. More likely a dealer who probably lost their dealer status. Lack of warranty is pretty common for speed parts. Besides, TTC is a large manufacturer of transmissions and I am quite sure they could get into legal trouble for posting false ratings of their product. http://www.ttcautomotive.com/English/products/TKO.asp
The T5 gear sets exist because some forms of racing require a stock outward appearance of the powertrain, in the end you still have a weak case and the gears can only be so thick and still fit inside. when you figure 1650 for gears and 300 for a complete rebuild kit, you are only a few hundred short of a TKO anyway...
