    Hey,
I got a 62 327(hp)that was from a SS Impala 4spd,i need to use a auto in my project and back of the crank is not as deep as a 350 crank i had layin 'round, the converter still goes in but how far does it need to go in??

I have heard of this on MoPars but not on chevs, but the steel crank first year 327 is throwing my mind a curve????Anybody know??Thanks!

Another cool thing which has nuttin to do with this is its a non bored motor!I have had it mothballed for years, thanks for any replys!

Sounds like the pilot bearing is installed in the crank, it can be removed easy. To answer your question thoughyou can install an automatic with it still in place. I just pulled a 350 out of an El Camino which has a TH350 and the engine still had a pilot bearing in it.

I never heard of the 327 cranks being any different between an auto or stick, we swapped 'em around when I was a kid like they had zippers on the mounts and never ran into a problem. To put your mind at ease though bolt a flexplate on it then test fit the converter, it should go in far enough for the mounting pads to touch the flexplate.

You can get the bushings/bearings in different thicknesses. Sounds like this one is still in it.

Pack the pilot bearing full of wheel bearing grease, and then use an old input shaft from a 3 or 4 speed, and a big hammer, pilot bearing should come right out.
