Im lowering the rear of my 50 chevy and wondering if anyone knows if anyone makes more than a 3 inch lowering blocks for the rear,( I have dropped uprights for the front and will prob cut a half a coil also). I know I should build them but I just dont have time cause I have ALOT of other stuff to do to it and the wife said if we are putting this much money into it that we have to drive it to Back to the 50s, and thats in a month........yikes. thanks for the help. And I did do a search and didnt really come up with anything.
You'll hit frame. You need to notch it to go that far. I had 3" blocks and posies, but I switched to an open rear, which raised it an inch. rode like ****, i know Minnesota roads aint much better than misery roads.
I made some 4" block, but it puts the U-bolts below scrubline. Bad news if I get a flat tire.get springs made that are lower (less arc.).
and you'll probably have to fab up blocks out of square tubing because of the difference in spring size... the blocks you can get at the local auto are like 2 1/2 wide and the springs are only like 2 inches (i think). i did the same as oilslinger but like he said, it's unsafe. so do it right the first time and save yourself the headache of worrying.
Carefull of the scrubline issue. If you get a flat at speed, you're gonna have to put your beer down to deal with it....
I have 4 inch blocks on my 54 that I got from a 4 wheel drive place. They use them to lift but same principal. Anyway, I HATE 'em. waaay too low in the back for me. Can't have **** in the trunk or the back seat. Hit frame constantly. But... it looks cool.
Thanks guys, I think Ill get some 3 inchers, thought I found a place that sold them so Ill have to try find it again, I know they are different than standard ones. As far as my beer goes, I wear a beer helmet so puttin er down wont be a issue.
The beer helmet is key! I went ahead and notched my and (god forbid) I bagged it too! Pics are to be uploaded soon! But she rides and sits low!!
What did you do for front and rear suspension? Did you pull the body when you notched the frame? Pics would be awesome, how much ya got in baggin it?
no need to pull the frame. so far Rusk has done the best tech and been the most help to me and a lot of other guys on here. check out his work...and Alex Gambino here on the hamb has got all the parts you'll need. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=202220&highlight=rusk
So I ordered 3 inch kit and I have read on here that some people do that and then take a leaf out, but wouldnt you have the same problem of the axle hitting the frame? Any recommendations to get it lower than 3 and not notching the frame or loosing ride quality?
I went off of Rusk post...have the Gambino notch... Alex actually put together my bag kit... i think with the tailgragger kit and whole bag set up, I have around 1600 or so in it. I had the lowered springs and all, and I would not go back now!
When i put 3" blocks in my 51 chevy convertible, it rode fine for about 6 months. Now the leafs are saggy and i had to get air shocks just to be able drive it. Now it looks like grease lightning! I plan on c-notching the frame soon, but if you must have 3" blocks without a c-notch, get some air shocks to drive the thing!
Thanks guys, I just got the car in Feb so we are in the process of getting her on the road and enjoy it for a year or too before we tear into it again.(427 and 9 inch that I already have and a mustang II with bags all around)
