Could use a little advise or pics on a steering column drop bracket for my 31 Roadster A V8. I am using a 40 46 Ford column with the large bell that mates nicely to the 40 standard steering wheel. My 31 is a late 31 with the column support attached to the cowl framing & not the gas tank. The problem I have is that the 46 column is a lot skinnier than the Model A column so the stock bracket doesn't work real well. The other problem is I want to lower the wheel so I am looking over it instead of thru it. Does anyone make an insert to the original that would drop it and also fit the column mast properly. Hopefully you guys will post some pics of how you solved the problem. I suspect I could have something milled out of aluminum but I am trying to avoid the billet approach. Also I am using the original 31 gas tank. Wonder what was done in the day so to speak. Thank you.
On the last 31 I bult I streached the factory drop 2" by cutting it and adding a section that I built to match. Afer grinding and sanding it looked factory. I also used a piece if stiff rubber as a spacer. I was thinking of machining on from billet and painting it black.
Round off the edges on your billet, sandblast the surface...then you can say "Bell Auto cast those back in '52 to drop Model A columns...found it behind an old filling station."
Ford actually made a steering column drop insert for that very purpose. They should be available from you local Model A parts supplier.
Really, I didn't see it in Bratton's catalogue but I will check them all out again. Thanks for the tip.
The ones shaped to just extend the stock drops with an aluminum spacer an long bolts, I think based on a tudor phaeton part, seem to have gone extinct in the aftermarket! They used to be as common as dirt.
