Hey. I'm Needing some info on the interior style that would look best in a 50s style custom 52 Pontiac Catalina. I was thinking tuck n roll in that metallic vinyl stuff that was in g***ers with like the GM style silver sparkly threaded black carpet. I also kinda needta know whether or not you can still get that Custom Chrome Tape like what was in the old RnCs. The stuff George Barris used sometimes. I was thinking a deep pearl maroon with a roof that would have a 1 inch wide strip of a gunmetal gray-ish color n then a 1" wide strip of that Chrome Tape and repeat.
the sparkly stuff is called zodiac and wasn't around until the early 60s (maybe late 50s)...if you want mid 50s period correct,,that won't work,,,,it would still look nice,,but wouldnt really be period
Phat, I beleive you are correct on this. We did not use it on El Tiki because according to quarter magazines it was newer than 1962. Did use it on our 57 chevy truck and the period was correct. Contact S***ch at VooDoo Larrys. He has the best selection of metalflake vinyl. Google Polaris Futura "the future of vinyl" I'm sure S***ch won"t mind me p***ing on his number. PM me if you want it.
Cant beat white tuck and roll and try to find some nice wintage pattern piping with some carpet to match the piping a little silver flake in the carpet always looks good too.
the world would be a better place if the term "period correct" was never used when discussing a recently built or in progress HOT ROD or custom..
why's that?...if you are going for a specific look, then the term certainly applies,,,,,,,, there ARE, however other things that are said here almost daily that drive ME nuts,, "it's your car,,build it the way you like" "thanks for the kind words (who really talks like that??)" "4 doors rule!!" "i think i threw up a little in my mouth" "what's a 38 dodge 4 door worth?" "poll: what color should i paint my car?" "what's the funniest thing you ever found in a car you bought?" "what is your definition of traditional?" hahaha......................you get the idea...
I went with burgundy and cream tuck and roll in a horseshoe pattern with contrasting piping. Chrome window frames top it off.
I love that Zodiac glitter material. Heres some pic's of my old 59 plymouth with zodiac and regular vinyl in a vintage tuck and roll. Gary
The correct name for the carpet is TRINIDAD. Type this into your search, you can still get it in many carpet color and metallic combinations. From my research I understand it to have come out in the early 60's, so maybe not so correct for the 50's vibe.
Pacemaker..That is just perfect. I was thinking along the same lines when I start doing my interior...
The first photo is of a seat I built in the mid 60's for my 40 Ford coupe when I lived in Reno. Wasn’t that comfortable so I covered a set of Volvo buckets in the red Zodiac.
If you are still looking for some sort of vinyl that will stand out a little more than your average bear look into pearl vinyls. Companies like pontiac were using them fairly early on (mid-to-late-fifties). In my opinon they look better than zodiac, they are acutally a better material too. And believe it or not can be cheaper as well. -Chris
There is a material they used in the mid-50s that I saw mentioned in the little books called frieze. Does anybody know what kind of material this is?
Polaris Futura is ****. Too thin, (can see the cloth backing in the surface) and fades in a matter of weeks if it gets any sun. Get the real Zodiac if you can afford it. It is a Naugahyde product. I found a couple sources online: http://www.yourautotrim.com/zoglvi.html http://www.barsandbooths.com/bandbvinylcolorselection.htm http://www.jhcarr.com/ Len
