I currently have the option to purchase one of two cars. I like to know some of the pros/ cons of both. 1. a 59 Edsel Ranger (2dr hardtop) with a straight 6 and a 3 on the tree. Runs well, no brakes, decent body (may need rocker panels) with I believe original paint. I can't remember much else as it has been a while since I looked at it. I'm hoping to take another look tonight. Hasn't been on the road in a number of years. 2. a 51 Plymouth 4 door sedan. Flathead 6 with a 3 on the tree. Currently roadworthy. Needs some repair to the floor, interior is in fair, usable condition. Body is overall pretty good with the exception of the rocker panels. Currently in primer as that was the look the current owner liked. Needs tires. No pictures at this time. Purchase price will be within a few hundred $ of each other with the Edsel being a slightly higher cost. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks
Edsel, hands down. Those old Mopars are uglier that death taking a ****, and there isn't much you can do to make them better. Edsels aren't a ton better, but at least it's a 2 dr. HT. Not much wisdom, just an opinion.
I'd have to go with the Edsel too. 2 doors, more of a head turner, probably worth more in the long run.
"Favorite Edsel" sounds like an oxy*****, but the '59s have always been mine. If you take the uglier one, let me know where the Edsel can be found. Just MHO.
If it was 2-door to 2-door I would vote for the Plymouth but it's not. You have to go with the 2-door just like you would have to go with the vert if that was a choice.
Plymouth! As **** ugly as it is there was nothing made in 1959, save the corvette, that was attractive! That's your only two choices? Either way don't worry about it being perfect or who else likes it just drive!
the edsel, especially a six-powered one, is much rarer and weirder and almost certainly worth more. if you want a reliable runner, though, you can't do much better that a plymouth flat six. cut my teeth on one of those, buddy's '49 plymouth 4-door, high school car, took all the abuse we could dish out and never once left us stranded. ok on gas, too. it just comes down to what your plans are for the car--they couldn't be more different, really. but don't discount the plymouth. they take small V8 swaps pretty easy and you could always suicide the doors and chop the top down a bit/lay the roof back to counter that weird way it hits the trunklid, and then you'd have one hell of a cool car, cooler than just about any edsel, at least in my estimation.
Are you high? That was one of the best years for anything GM. I friggin' hate GMs, but would take any '59 year GM over most anything else made that year. Those early 50s Plymouths would even be an embar***ing looking trailer. Even as a two door, Barf.
Get the Edsel. If you find out you really don't want the car, at least you'll have a traditional donor 9" Ford rearend for a skinny hotrod.
Thats gotta be the most ridiculous statement I've heard in a long time. Thats like saying "Nothing made in Italy is fast!". get the edsel...
Edsel gets my vote, too. I think it would be the better investment ... that is, if that's what's important to you. Besides, the Edsel is sportier.
I will go for the Edsel with now more discussion ! I love them for some damn reason . But go for it !
Edsel. No question. Unless it's a '32-'34 Ford, or something you have seen very closely before, it's generally understood not to buy a car at night. The creatures that stir aren't the only thing that hides well... Daylight tells no lies.
It's gonna be YOUR car!! Why are you asking us ? I would try to swing for both of them. Go for the Edsel! all the more old Mopar parts for me!
I think it would depend on how much work you are going to commit to. A nice 4dr plymouth doesen't look as nice as a nice edsel. Both have issues and why put your time and cash into a 4dr if you can have a 2dr. with the same amount of energy and cash give or take. I agree with Bruce. The amount of work has to be considered. My 2 cents
Well everyone, Thanks for the input. I took another look at the Edsel this evening. I've decided that even though it had my attention enough that I have gone to look it over a couple of times, I will not be getting the Edsel. I'm looking for something that I can have on the road at least briefly before the end of summer. I think the Edsel is more than I'm ready to jump into. Regarding the question about are these my only choices, no (just look at the hamb cl***ifieds for plenty of choice) they aren't my only options. They were just my first choices since they are fairly local and my initial cost would have been workable. I'm going to search a little more before I committ to the Plymouth. I've made plenty of dumb decisions in the past because of excitement.
