Heres the story and the setup I am using. A while back my alt quit charging. I jumped the F and A terminals at the regulator, no charge. Removed the alt, parts store tested it, dead. Installed new parts store alt, no charge. Jumped F and A, worked fine. Installed a new Motorcraft regulator. Seemed to work fine. Once I noticed when starting the car the volt guage showed a discharge, shut it off, restarted it and it charged again. I inspected the connector at the regulator, found one wire backed out. Replaced the hardshell connector and wires, seemed ok again. Now its back to only charging every so often, but it either works or it doesnt when you start the car till you turn it off. The set up is off of a 68 fullsize ford car. The I terminal is hooked to the starter solenoid, gets hot when car is started. A is batt +, S is the stator to the alt, and F is the field to the alt. When it is charging, the A terminal is 14.4 volts, bright test light, the S is 7.2 volts and F is 7.6-9.4 volts. When it isnt working, S and F will not light the test light. What am I missing here. Thanks for any help. BTW, my wiring harness is an EZ2Wire E12 if that helps Brad
If the I terminal is to a switched ign source, why cant I run it from the start terminal at the solenoid? It is just piggybacked from the ign switch and only in start. The I terminal should only be hot when in start right? Have you seen regulators that work only when they want to? Brad
So if you have a dodge regulator, The field would be my F terminal, the ign would be the A, and the ground is the stator? Or would ground be something else, What about the ford I terminal? I looked at an old wiring diagram in a 70s motor manual, I guess since I dont have a batt light I dont need the I terminal, What you said is making sense now. I can get another regulator, but it will be a couple days out. Any thing else I should check? Brad
Try this on your Ford regulator wiring... Ch***is ground to ground on alternator. F post on alternator to F post on regulator. A post on regulator to Ignition on source. (power goes off and on with ignition switch) S post on regulator to Ignition on source. No wiring to STA. post on alternator. Works every time for me...hope this helps.
Ok, new here but may as well answer a question I know a little about Here are some links that may explain the setup of the wiring.Pictures of typical Ford external regulator wiring, first pic is with ammeter system, second is with idiot light system. If you do not have an ammeter you need the idiot light system or the alternator will not charge. http://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gall...=16603&width=0 http://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gall...=28796&width=0
Got the info from R&C years ago. The series was called "Rod Wiring Simplified" and I used the diagrams and other info to wire all the cars I've built over the years. May not be right, but it works for me.
