reason for my oiling enquiries are this. i got a 69 mach 1 and the 351 windsoe came with it but not installed. motor was rebuilt at a machine shop but has not been run. when i tried to prime the oil i got no oil on the drivers side top end of the motor. the lifters and pushrods all came good on the p***enger side but only 30 psi oil pressurewhen i checked with a mechanical gauge. after trying to get the drivers side lifters to prime for 15 mins i still had no oil through the pushrods. so i took the timing cover off and checked the crossover plugs behind the cam gear and they were there. this one got me stumped so if anyone has got any ideas they sure would be appreciated

try rolling the motor a few times by hand, then prime it, i cant recall on a ford but most motors need the dist body to tranfer oil correctly, thats why a primer usually has the body not just a shaft, also remember the oil pump is driven at cam speed, one half of rpm ,most drills turn about 500 so that = 30 psi @1000 rpm which is plenty. if you cant get it then pull the pan and stick the sump into a bucket of oil while a mate primes it, youll find your leak- off . remember pressure is volume X restriction, no restriction{loose bearing, plug, etc.} no pressure hope this helps

    :D yep sounds correct

  4. The 351 does not p*** oil through the distributor base. Turning the engine over part way and repeating would be my effort. Because you checked the galley plugs, the only other thing I would think off is the cam bearings not being installed correctly. I don't remember if the 351 cam bearings have multiple slots or not. Sorry I'm not much help.

Done several 351's and 302's, most of them had to run for ten minutes or so to get any oil to the top. I oil them with a squirt can while they run at 1500 RPM or so, until the pressure finally gets there. Don't know why they do it, just one of those things, I guess.

Yep, what he said.........what I would do......prime it and just keep it going........see if after about 8 minutes you should have some oil up there. Now the lifters will restrict flow........if you prime the piss outta it and still no oil, pull the valve cover, pull the pushrods out......prime while looking onto the top of the lifter.....if you see oil....your OK. If not, something is wrong.............probably a cam bearing..............

I have also built numerous small block Fords (more than 20) and have NEVER had that much problem getting oil to the top end. Usually within a a couple of minutes with the drill primer method. If you've got 30psi you should have oil everywhere from my experience.
    Good Luck

If it's got hydraulic lifters, work the plungers by hand as the drill runs. Basically push on the rockers to make the lifters' guts start moving with oil behind em, helps air p***. I get the same thing with chevies every now and then since I don't like the whole priming-lifters-in-a-can routine. Good luck
