'Got up early this morning and drove the 150 or so miles from my house to Maxton, NC for the ECTA meet. The forecast was iffy but I decided to go anyway, knowing it would probably rain. I got down there about 11 AM and shortly after noon a thunderstorm came through, since I had a pending family event later I decided to leave...don't know if they were able to resume or not, maybe somebody elso who was there will know. I was able to get some photos before the rain came. Maxton is the real deal, I had a great time and will definately go back when I can stay longer and hopefully the weather is better. I'm old enough to remember how drag racing used to be, before the corporate suits found it The speed trials at Maxton are as close to the laid back, friendly atomsphere that I miss as one is likely to find anywhere. How's this for a throw back to better days: Admission was only $5, parking was free and sodas were only a buck. And the competition was great. The guys from the Rolling Bones shop were there and I managed to get several pictures. Most of my shots are in the pits as there was a lull in the activities on the course while I was there. I did get to see the Bones roadster make a pass and several bikes as well. Here are the photos...
Rather than add another thread on the May Maxton event, I'll just add my photos here. My grandson and I left Suwanee @ 5:00am and arrived just as a Corvette blew to shut the course down for over an hour....just long enough for the rain front to move in and slow down the day even more. I shot just a few photos of stuff that trips my trigger. The belly tank with the 4 banger is a brand new piece built by my #1 racing buddy, and builder of my Fiat Comp Coupe, EJ Kowalski. First pass on the tank neted a 99+ time slip. Not to shabby for the first pass on a whole new combination. We had to leave before racing got back into gear, so I'm not sure what the jet change produced on his nest pass. Enjoy
A few more from the Odds and Ends category.... How do you improve the classic Raymond Lowey Studebaker? blend what looks like some late model Firebird front fascia bits to it. How do you bring a couple bikes down from Maine? How 'bout a wild GMC COE
We weren't able to make this one either due to work, but we're going to try to make the next one, a friend of ours may run his Stude in June, that's for posting the pics.
That is not a BugEyed Sprite, but it is a Crosley Super Sport, being an open car it requires a roll bar. We started off Sunday morning with a slightly wet track, but after they let us slower vehicles run to dry it off further, the show has been going on strong ever since, but it now is starting to get a gusty cross wind, I may get another run in myself, but so far I haven't reached my best ever time. There are a lot of past Maxton event pictures on my Wild Hare Racing web site http://www.pbase.com/iamflagman/wild_hare_racing_land_speed_racing_rabbit
FYI. There is a HAMB Group for land speed racing addicts.... If your a speed addict, this is for you. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/group.php?groupid=101 Just say NO to SLOW.
What you are calling a "Bug Eye" is not an Austin Healey Sprite "Bug Eye" but is a Crosely Super Sport. Made in the early fifties. It has a 750cc (45cu in) overhead cam aluminum head factory. This is the nicest fabricated land speed I have ever seen. Well done, just not fast ... I believe that the fastest it has gone is 81 mph ... probably has 75 horsepower ... Joe
I will add my photos when I down load them ... good meet ... Steve Van Blarcom ran the supercharged street roadster ... Jimmy Shine drove the "Nostalgia Street Rod" roadster. Joe
I made it down to Maxton on Saturday from Richmond.... Pull in the gate at 12 noon on the dot... the bottom drops out of the sky.... Seems to be what happens every time I go .... The rain delay gave me an opportunity to spend time "benchracing" for several hours with my Saltine friend (Jim Price) from Vegas who made the trek from out West .... Racing started up again after about 2 hours due to the temp that helped to dry the track out sufficiently to let the slower cars run at first then the faster cars just before quitting time on Saturday ..... Steady rain for several hours on Saturday night (thankful the tend didn't leak) ..... Overcast Sunday morning but racing started around 8:30 once again for the slower cars until the rain hit about 9:15 to stop the racing. Headed home.... A lot of good images posted already will add a few more tomorrow Dallas
they were both. they had two sports car models. one was called the hotshot the other was called the super sport. the hotshot had among other things, no hinged doors. The "door area" had a dip to it that you stepped over to enter and exit the vehicle. the door area on that particular crosley doesn't match either model crosley hot shot: crosley super sports:
We went as well, arrived just afternoon at the height of the downpour. We drove through the pits, down the track, talked with a biker, gave him a ride back the pits and left. Wife and kids weren't all that interested in hanging out in the rain. The biker was really fun to talk with and everyone was super friendly. Well worth the 2 hour drive for me. We did get a good feel for the place and learned to bring lawn chairs and a bigger cooler for next time. Maybe I can even talk them into to staying the weekend in June.
Looking to find information on the little Blue 28-9 (?) Roadster with the biggie/littles in the picture third from bottom.... NC tag CW 9760....in the initial post by SeaDog Any help in locating contact information for the owner will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Dallas
That's my Dad's 27 Chrysler. The pics have disappeared from the original thread I put up, but, here and here is a little background. Basically, the top 2/3 of the cowl/firewall/dash and the rear quarters from the character line up to the decklid opening are the only sheetmetal that Dad didn't build from scratch. The frame and most of the suspension are also scratch-built. I'll PM you with my contact info...
Slide, Noticed the front end, really grabbed my attention. Got busy and didn't get a chance to take photos, thanks for posting the links. Next time I see the car I will MAKE time to take some detail shots. IMPRESSIVE WORKMANSHIP! Ed
