Hey all you knowledge heads... I'm trying to learn whether or not (newer) 37-41 Ford spindles can fit onto an (older) Model A axle. My goal is to run the newer RADAIR 12 spoke (gasser style) wheels up front and like this axle more than my current one since it has very little drop and is wider than mine... ANY info is GREATLY appreciated. Please feel free to email me what you can: chaun@sbcglobal.net Here's the I-Beam info and pic... THNX!!! The spindle end hole measures .815, the trailing arm mounting holes measure .685. The axle measures 52" long.
Passenger car and pickup spindles break down into these groups: 28-31 Model A 32-34 35-36, or 35-36early, 36late 37-41 42-47 Pickup, 42-48 Pass. Each of these spindles fits the Passenger Car and Pickup axles from 1928-48 on cars and 28-52 on pickups. The pre-37 spindles should probably be left to the restorers but if you must you must. The 37-41 round flange spindles are the most popular in the hotrod world. The 42-48 "square" flange spindles come in a close 2nd. Both of these groups of spindles accept the hydraulic brakes and hubs. Remember, alway use the kingpins which match your spindles, not the axle.
YUP! bolt up no problem. use the later kings pins too, which means that bearing is where it is supposed to be. not all goofy and on top!!! -drZ
so i just picked up a believe 52 mercury truck axle with backing plates and hubs. if i remember correct you can not use the spindles but can i use the hubs and brakes?
If the Canadian Mercury is the same as an F1 you can use the hubs, drums and backing plates with a bearing kit from Speedway. You can not use the driver's side spindle. But you can use two passenger side spindles to make one set. To do this you must use aftermarket steering arms.
