61 T-Bird HELP!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by C5Cruiser, May 19, 2009.

  1. I just bought this 61 Bird and a light comes on and goes off when I give it some gas and stays off once it warms up. It says DIS. What the hell is DIS? I picked up a owners manuel and have a repair manuel and nothing mentions it.
Any one know what it may mean?

I always thought it was the generator light..."DIS" for "Discharge". If it's on, it's not charging your battery.

  3. DISCHARGE!! Aaahhhh!!! That makes sence. When I first start her up it the RPM's are a but low but once it warms up it never comes on. I was going to take a look at that. Maybe the low RPM's would cause that. I should have the battery checked out also I guess since it hadn't run in over a year and the battery was dead when I bought it. It seems to hold a charge from day to day thou.

Does it have a generator or alternator? On older models of both I believe you had to rev the engine on startup to energize them and get them charging, that may be why the light comes on then goes off. If it stays on, that would indicate you had a problem. Sounds normal in your case. I've never been much of an electrics guy, I'm sure someone else will chime in...

  5. Stay tuned.
I'll have more questions on the T-Bird.

I have a 61 falcon and had the same time problem my gen light would come on when it was at idle I got a new battery and still had the problem but when running it was fine I finally adjusted the idle a little higher and now have no problems so before you get a new battery you might try and adjust the idle mixture a little... good luck

  7. It has a gen and I haven't had a problem with it. I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't going to have one soon.
