straight axle Ranchero, but not gassy?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by sgtlethargic, May 19, 2009.

  1. My '61 Ranchero has no rear end or engine in it at the moment, so it's setting low in the rear and high in the front. I kind of like the look, like a boat through water. I have a stock MII front end I've been considering putting in it, especially since the bottlecap hubcaps fit on the MII 4-lug/13" wheels. Removing the shock towers and making more room in the engine compartment is a good byproduct.

Anyway, I was thinking maybe an Econoline front axle would be a little easier, and maybe kind of cool. But, I'm not going for the g***er look at all. So, would most of you think it'd look like it is a poor attempt at a g***er? And, how would it ride? It wouldn't be sky high, and I'd probably go with shorter/lighter leaf springs.

    Thanks,
    Kurt

The econoline axle will have to be cut and rewelded. Pretty common deal. You're right...dump the econo springs...they're too long.

  3. I had an axle before and I kind of liked the full width when I mocked it up. Any reason it shouldn't be full width?

    Thanks,
    Kurt

It's going to have a g***er look if you run the straight axle! I'm with you I bet it looks good with the full width axle!
