I'm using a plain old NAPA 3033 canister fuel filter. Is there any reason it can't be mounted vertically, ******s at top & bottom. As opposed to horizontal or mostly horizontal?
Shouldn't be an issue, isn't that the way they are normally mounted? Like between the fuel pump and carb on a SBC.
Spin-on filter? Shouldn't make a difference. I run spin-on oil filters and fuel filter horizontally. Never seen any cautions about doing it that way. I note that most installs are vertical.
No such thing as a dumb question. The filter only cares that you show it some love & change it as part of regular maintenance. As long as you have the fuel flowing in the right direction, the position doesn't matter.
3033 NAPA Gold Fuel Filter universal 3/8 inch in-line filters work great as long as you have your flow right ie: in-> out->. I am running two on my 54' F-100 one vertically and the other horizontal.
Yeah I know the in/out deal but was wondering if there was a reason for vertical as opposed to horizontal.
Incidently ... and not a dumb question at all ... some fuel filters in certain applications know vertical from horizontal. If you are ever working on a Model A with one of those chrome/gl*** sight filters, and fuel does not gravity flow well to the carb, bet the filter is vertical. Doesn't sound possible, but have seen it multiiple times. And, can't explain it.
I'll be Mr. Obvious here and remind you that the fuel flow should be UP not down if you mount the filter vertically. Fuel lines need to run at least slightly uphill to vent any vapor that may be created.
That's what I was wondering about, the only difference from a stock Model A would be the presence of a fuel pump in my system. I think that all stock Model A's are simple gravity feed. I think I'm going to go ahead and mount this one vertical. If it turns into a problem it probably won't take more than 2-3 months to replumb from the pump to the carb.
