but got no answer!!!! ok so im planing on starting a project next month... plan on building the frame, cab and bed (mock early 30s ford) but i started to wonder.... how am i going to get this thing legal to drive on CA roads? so my question is how do i go about doing this? i see alot of guys with ground up builds or finding bodys on side of a barn and then driving latter... just wondering how you guys did it? thanx Hooligan
You will have to use a title from another car (not sure how legal) or have it inspected by the D.O.T. and assigned a VIN number.
That is a good question but hard to answer for someone we don't know. Just build it and worry about it later.
you got paper for any part of the car, the body maybe? something to give the finished car an established ID number. some places, you gotta have reciepts for any major parts to get a title issued. you might be able to get a copy of your DMV regs on whats necessary by going to their website. most states have some provision for "scratchbuilt" cars in their regs. good luck, happy hunting.
Legally, it has to be inspected by the CHP and titled as special construction. Once inspected, the CHP will issue and affix a vin number to your frame. Save all receipts.
ohhhh im going to build it no worries been planing on this for awhile!!!!! now im out of alaska and in So Cal where i can get the parts i need!! so its going to happen... just was wondering how to get it la jit for the road lol.. ahhh thanx post been up like 2 mins and allready got way more help then a week on the other forum lol! but to answer some of what one guy said... im not buying any frame or body.. im building it all from scratch... thats the plan anyway. im making the frame on the 15th then starting the cab and bed after that.... so really only thing im not doing is the drive train and front end... i was thing about just trying to find an old frame with a title or somthing and seeing if i swing it that way or somthing
well if it makes you feel anybetter i only have 4 post on that "other forum" lol this one seems muchhhhhhhhhhh more active so i think my attention will be placed here!
Did they have google over on that "other" forum? http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/spcns_main.htm Para 3 of the Emission Control segment is what KILLS in CA.
I was gonna recommend you worry less about the car, and more about learning to use the search function. There's a lot of information about this kind of stuff here and on the net.... or, you could just go to your local DMV and try the real traditional way...... ask.
Street Rodder Mag had a two part series on licensing their scratch built '34 Chev. Think it was last year or so and it was in California! Go to their archives and search.
ohhh im finding this out quick lol!!!! but im pretty glad to be doing this project... its a lil off the beating path but i have come across some ppl that seem to be looking forward to it being done! lol just hope it does HAHAHA
just asked that very question at the dmv because i have a 1938 ford truck with no frame.. was told you would have to have a special permit that once a year in january you get run to dmv with all your paperwork and try to pass smog..every year..year after year.. better to have a titled frame to begin with that is smog exempt unless someone can tell of a better way... (looking for a titled 38-39 pickup frame)
What I am curious about---is How do you get insurance for a ratrod? Every time I got insurance they DEMANDED a photo and there is NO WAY they would insure anything that looked like those ratrods
Now that you're up to 8 posts (you will be when you answer this), did you introduce yourself properly...??? If not, hop to it...!!! R-
Just remember that out of all the responses to your post 90% will be wrong and lead you down the wrong path and the rest will be right, it is up to you to decipher witch is witch!
