You will have to use a title from another car (not sure how legal) or have it inspected by the D.O.T. and assigned a VIN number.

That is a good question but hard to answer for someone we don't know. Just build it and worry about it later.

you got paper for any part of the car, the body maybe? something to give the finished car an established ID number. some places, you gotta have reciepts for any major parts to get a title issued. you might be able to get a copy of your DMV regs on whats necessary by going to their website. most states have some provision for "scratchbuilt" cars in their regs. good luck, happy hunting.

Legally, it has to be inspected by the CHP and titled as special construction. Once inspected, the CHP will issue and affix a vin number to your frame. Save all receipts.

I was gonna recommend you worry less about the car, and more about learning to use the search function. ;)

There's a lot of information about this kind of stuff here and on the net.... or, you could just go to your local DMV and try the real traditional way......

    ask.

Street Rodder Mag had a two part series on licensing their scratch built '34 Chev. Think it was last year or so and it was in California! Go to their archives and search.

just asked that very question at the dmv because i have a 1938 ford truck with no frame.. was told you would have to have a special permit that once a year in january you get run to dmv with all your paperwork and try to pass smog..every year..year after year.. better to have a titled frame to begin with that is smog exempt unless someone can tell of a better way... (looking for a titled 38-39 pickup frame)

What I am curious about---is How do you get insurance for a ratrod?

Every time I got insurance they DEMANDED a photo and there is NO WAY they would insure anything that looked like those ratrods
