This is the second time I have seen a car with dual rears instead of a larger tire. Was there a supposed advantage to this setup, or maybe to get around some tire rule, or was it just cheaper to use the skinnies instead of a fat tire?

The duals were the step after single skinnies and before grooving drag slicks. We ran them at the same time/track in the early 60s.

No ID whatsoever (on the car or the negative's sleeve) but my friends whose fathers raced at Lancaster at that time tell me this is "Steve Mal." Seems Steve's last name was a long Polish one, so he shortened it to "Mal."

  21. Here's an Australian modified from the seventies. The driver is Paul Cannon, he was the Australian champion back then, the picture was in the pits at the Newcastle Motordrome.

Merv Treichler, 1973, Lancaster (NY) Speedway. Gordon Reinig photo. I was a big fan of Merv's, but I never cared much for Modifieds with full windshields...

By looking at the chassis set up it looks like you ausies turn left..?? It is some kind of scary to have your head/ human body up against the wall. But I guess its not a problem if you start out that way.. Do any of the modifidies have left hand drivers poss? Thanks to every one Keep posting them.. Thank You.. Bobby...

    Steve,
My last name is Langer. I was the smallish guy with glasses, clean-cut, straight arrow. Randy Doucette and I drove my '73 Corolla from Cromwell to Clinton and back every day, 25 miles each way.
I have never seen a picture of the Monza, which was a yellow #69, of course. It ran in '76. Don't know about '77. Don't know when Nels got out of racing. John Hoffman ran a dark blue #1 Monza in '78. Might have been the car. Monzas were very uncommon modifieds in CT. dave Dykes might have a photo.

    Regards,
    Chris

I think i remember you. Do you remember any Darlings ? My moms name is Linda , Dads name is Fred and my two older brothers are Scott and Jeff. My dad passed March 8, 2002. He helped Nels on the bomber before the modified and he helped a little bit on the modified. If you find any pictures of the monza please let me know. I know there is at least one of it in the pits at Thompson. Nels is standing beside it. One more thing was Randys old ladys name Dawn ?

  29. K9racer, yup, all our speedways are turn left, just like yours. We only have bullrings though, 1/4 mile is the standard with the occasional 3/8 mile and very few half miles.

In Australian speedway back in the seventies and earlier we had modifieds and late models all running right hand drive, but in the early 80's after an influx of American cars and drivers (like Jack Hewitt and Rodney Combs etc.) we did the switch to left hand drive cars... but only until about 1988 when the super sedans (that's what our late models are called) mysteriously voted to change back to right hook.

Most of the modifieds were American cars, or fibreglass replica's anyway.

Dr. John thanks for keeping them coming. I had forgotten about the V3 of Gary Reddick and that Mike Miller drove the Turner brothers 18 too.
