How much horsepower will a stock 350 chevy crank take? Will the cast scat and eagle cranks actually take any more HP than a stock cast crank or is it just a marketing gimmick? I am trying to decide what to do on my engine. Also, how much HP will a stock forged crank take? Thanks
Stock GM crank, assuming proper balancing and careful installation will take 400-450hp+ all day long with good rods and decent pistons. I'm not a big Eagle fan but I know for a fact you'll drive over a stock GM crank before you even stress out the SCAT 9000 series cast steel crank.
I would say about 500 if you're careful. I have had the opposite experience with scat vs eagle. My friend Jimmy's truck consistently runs 5's (in the 1/8th) on an eagle crank. My friend Dwayne broke 3 Scats in his Malibu before he gave up and went to Eagle. All the nitrous guys I know say Scat is short for scatter. Apparently the Scat stuff doesn't handle the shock loads of nitrous well.
The engine is a 350 bored 60,scat pro comp 6" rods, probe forged dome pistons, 200cc dart platinum heads, about 11:5:1 com. I would like to run a solid roller, IF money allows it. I will be spraying 150, what would be my best option? stock chevy forged crank?
There is more at play than just the crank. If I had broken 3, as above, I would suspect main journal alignment issues in the block. It won't matter what you spend on the rotating assy if there is a bunch of core shift in the block. What you do now is really about risk assessment. You can spend $x now and gamble breaking to then spend $x again, or you can spend 2 $x now and likely have no worries down the road.
A lot depends upon your compression ratio and the rpms you plan to turn. The weight of your pistons is also a factor. If you run a "real blower" like a 671 or larger, you will need a good forged crank so that the blower doesn't rip the snout off of the crank. Consult a reputable engine shop that builds racing engines to get advice on what you need for your particular setup and how you plan to drive the car.
No speculation- - - -actual dyno results: A 355 C.I. round track engine we built in my shop a few years ago with a factory forged crank and "Pink" rods (GM high performance) produced 575 HP at 7,200 RPM on one Holley 4-barrel and Union 76 racing gasoline. We ran it 3 seasons on the Nashville 5/8 mile track with a rod & main bearing change every 1,000 laps. The next one we built went 614 HP @ 7,200 with a slightly more radical cam and H-beam rods. The buildup is the secret to high HP and reliability. Jerry
China China China....................... Buy a lunati. I used to run the scats in vw's They were fine in the late 80's and early 90's but something happened to them. I now have two busted cranks right at the journals. I wouldn't put a scat in a briggs & stratton. Don't know anything about the Eagle. If it's made in China its disposable shit.
