Headed to North Carolina friday for a week of fun in the sun. Just wondering if there might be something going on Hot Rod related at the north end of the outer banks. Let me know. Thanks
I go every Summer to get my Surf Jones taken care of. There are some nice cars sitting in Yards and Fields on the way down 168 from VA plus a nice outdoor cl***ic car used car lot. Have Fun it's a great place. Our place is in Rodanthe.
Our place is in Frisco........nothing *hot rod* there at all....but there is a flying saucer! (Know what I mean?) CB
when 168 south turns into 158, just over the intercoastal bridge headed south on the left is COINJOCK AUTOMOTIVE. Andy Mason owns it, great guy. always has a few cl***ic vettes, street rods. even some 1920's rare stuff. coke machines and cool stuff in the building out front. tell him Dave in cortland new york sent you. its worth the stop... have fun Cadillac Dave
Freddy bear of the S&S team lives in kill devil hills. You should check out grave diggers place. G***er Girl
Great place to explore the old car engine/workboat connection, though not really hot rods. At Roanoke Island, for instance, if you stop at a place like Mann's Harbor you can look around the commercial fishing fleet and see all kinds of old car motors that have been put to use in boats. Last trip I saw lots of Chevy inlines, a 318 mopar, a couple 454 BBCs, Y-blocks and even a flathead. Pretty interesting to see the way that fishermen have rigged up these motors. And if you like boats and projects, by all means stop by Paul Mann's Custom Boats. Amazing what they are building in their shop, all hand fabricated. But just about anywhere you can find large scale projects in backyards: like a guy building a 60' sport fishing boat in a shed behind his house. Talk about a project! Makes most of us look like pikers. If you are driving and going through Raleigh, by all means check out Rod-o-Rama. If you are flying into Norfolk, check out Flatlanders' Hot Rods. All nice people. I see there are a few folks in the area. I'm in Elizabeth City, NC. I try to keep an eye out for car shows out this way, but not much going on here down south. Most of them are in the Hampton Roads area
I stumbled across Grave Diggers place last year in November on a drive from Norfolk to Charleston. It's a stop / tourist trap / but not a bad place to stretch your legs. Actually some of the coolest stuff we hit were some of the old Plantations in the Charleston area. If you run across some of that in NC it's worth the time...Check the Internet.
Never been up in that area before and am really looking forward to it. We have a house rented on the sound side in corolla for a week and will be there sometime on saturday afternoon.
The Outer Bank are the barrier islands off the coast of mainland NC. Kitty Hawk is out there.. Also worth the visit.
For ****s and giggles........ Run Highway 12 all the way down to Hatteras (about 80 to 90 miles south of Corolla) through the Cape Hatteras Sea Shore Park and take the Ferry over to Ockracoke Island. Not a Hotrod thing, but a pretty neat ride. I vacation down in Buxton / Avon every year.
Kitty Hawk is definatley in the plans. Thinking about renting a jeep for a drive south down the banks for the day.
No need to drive south to get on the Banks, you'll be able to get on the sand at Corolla. Also, there should be some wildhorses wondering about the beach up there, keep your camera handy.
There is a jeep rental place right there in Corolla. As previously mentioned, you can drive North until the hard road ends, and right out onto the beach. It is then approximately 17 miles up to the VA/NC border. There is a fence at the border and you can't go any further. There are approximately 700 houses from the end of the road at Corolla to the border. Whole communities accessible only by 4wd up the beach that most people never get to see. Pretty interesting trip. Pack some drinks and eats, although there are some spartan general stores up the beach. Everything up there has to be packed in, and in times of high surf, these communities just hunker down and stay put. If you go South and go to Ocracoke, a little different deal. The ferry ride over is 30 minutes from Hatteras. The island is 14 miles long and 11 of it is National Seashore. At the South end of the island, you can drive right out onto the beach. Great trip down to the point. Your nearest beach neighbor will be quite a ways from you. The North end of the island also has an access point. Check out Howard's. Good place for a beer and a burger. It is an Ocracoke landmark. Good luck on the trip. You'll have a blast. Pete Richmond, VA
You got to go down to eat at Mamma Kwans MP 9.5 in Kill Devil Hills. Have the Hawaiin pork plate and be prepared to want to eat there several more times. I saw Southern Cutlture on The Skids there last year so keep an eye out for music acts in town ( Kitty Hawk, Nags Head ,KDH )
Spent 3 months in Corolla a couple of years ago building the wildlife center right by the Corolla light house. Best roadtrip I had. Check out it out, just look for the light house and it is on the banks of the Sound.
Another thing, watch your speed when you get near the coast on NC. NC 17 north and south of Elizabeth City are in the top 10 most ticketed areas in the state, and the police on the beach at Corolla don't play around either.
Been there a few times with the family (Kitty Hawk, Waves, Rondathe). This year were renting a house on Ocracoke Island (June). It's not car related but you should stop by the Mad Crabber in Avon for dinner after a day on Ocracoke Island. Great eats!! If you don't already have a 4wd rent one. There is a large section of beach north of Corolla and on Ocracoke Island that is open to 4wd traffic.
Hatteras Rules...your like 60 miles off mainland U.S.A.... on a thin strip of land... 4x4 on the beach...huge bonfires... Heaving sick barrels... I usually will base out of the Frisco area.... But...i should add... Im a filthy bum...and just really just want to surf, eat , sleep...while im there... so that area works for me to stay central to where i like to surf...
When you head up Route12 at Southern Shores, headed towards Duck and Corolla be prepared for traffic. Saturday is check in/out day for the weekly rentals, It moves steady just slow, so if you are prepared for it (take a leak before you head up to the Northern beaches) you will be fine. The non paved roads above Corolla is Carova. Watch out for the Wild horses that roam freely up that way and have your camera with you. Chili Peppers in KDH has some tasty food, same guy owns the Egg And I in Corolla for breakfast. Sunset Grille in Duck is great for a drink and food right on the water. Corolla Has a nice Harris Teeter grocery store and a Food Lion for your food shopping, so you don't have to worry about getting food in Kitty Hawk. Have Fun!
