Old Rusty, my 31A on 32 rails has always had a sort of raggedness about it. even when running well it always had a misfire when I floored it.
I was tipped off that the old Lucas industrial distributer wasn't the best as there tended to be a leak path for the HT (spark) inside the cap because the rotor arm was too thin or something.
I made up a new rotor arm from a 4 cyl car type dist and it seemed a bit better. It did however still have a persistant raggedness under all conditions.
I pulled the plugs and the front four looked ok, but the back 4 looked sooty. ***uming the rear carb to be running rich I tore it down. There was a sloshing sound from the float. Aha! that's it.
I fitted another float from a spares carb and just tried it. It's fine!
the raggedness has gone, so that was the float, and the misfire at full throttle has gone, so the rotor arm mod works too!
    Stoked in Solihull,
    Mart.
PS Message to any Ex Pat Brits. I'm eating fish and chips from the shop down the road as I write this.
Just thought I'd make you homesick.

Good troubleshooting! I remember the fish and chips from a little place near the naval yard at Portsmouth. I was there many years ago and met several local rodders, but seem to remember the lager and fish and chips most.

    Cool on solving the misfire.

Surprising too how many times a carb will mimic an ignition problem or vice-versa.

  8. Mart,

glad to hear that the missfire is sorted, as I've always followed the progress on "Old Rusty". My little Girl - 1 year 2 weeks found your site on the computer the other day, I'm not sure how she did it, as she was sitting on the keyboard. Any updates for the website ????

I'm jealous of the fish and chips, as well as the beer, can't get a decent pint over here, Victoria Bitter is lager, and Tooheys Old tastes like fizzy bitter, and decent imported beer costs too much.

Glad to hear O-R is going well.

    Cheers

    Bob

Cool on the solution. Kind of ironic. I just did a bunch of rejetting only to find the problem was in my distributor.

Not really - thank the EU for health & safety they have to wrap it in proper hygenic paper - some shops will still wrap the newspaper around the outside though... [IMG]

Happy to hear about the misfire fix, but I have to admit that I looked in here hoping to find a 'victory shot' of the roadster...

  16. Since this post is on topic and off topic at the same time..........

Any of you Brits have the magic recipe for good fish and chips? Some of you know my p***ion for cooking (and yes incinerating ONCE [IMG]). I like to do dishes as close to how the are originally intended. Kinda the HAMB twist on food. [IMG]

BTW, I wont order Fish and Chips if the place doesnt have Malt Vinegar!!!!!!! Is that wrong? I love the ****.

    Thanks fellas.
Lots of questions, lets see if I can answer em all.
Yes I was at the drags, Artiki, but I parked way over in the corner towards the back of the start line, Surprised I didn't see you.
Bob, sorry no updates on the web site, to be honest I am happy to just let it sit for now, I looked at it the other day and found lots of stuff I'd forgotten about!
Kev and Ernie, I don't think I will be at the All Ford Rally, having been away so much lately there's lots to do at home, but you never know.
Tman: You can COOK Fish and Chips? I thought you could only buy it from the shop down the road!.
I'm no cook but there can't be too much to it.
I have had fish and chips in restaurants in the states and it's not the same so lets think why.
1, you need one big piece of fish, with no bones in. here the standard is Cod, But I prefer Haddock as the portions are bigger. the Batter is a simple flour and water mix I think, the fish is dipped in the batter mix and deep fried.
2, the chips should be about 3/8" square, so they are soft in the middle. They must be cut from the biggest potatoes you can find, and deep fried like the fish.
Serve up with Salt and Vinegar and you're there.
That's about all I know, if any more is required I'll have to ask Charley at the Chip Shop.
    Mart.
PS Re the victory shot, the car looks as it always has, only dirtier!
Here's the original victory shot, after returning from it's first MOT test.

I've learned a lot from living over here & even tried a lot of new things I never would have had the chance to. But there's one thing I will never understand - that's vinegar on chips! Nearly as gross as mayonaise on chips - I thought only the frogs did that! [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

There's no danger to the world's vinegar supply from me!

  19. Tman - you probably know this one, but I'll p*** it on anyway.

Make the batter with beer and flour.
    A little paprika if desired.
Makes for a nice light battered fish and it works well if done in a deep skillet full of vegetable oil.
As you can imagine, a sailboat rocking around at anchor ain't the best thing in the world for deep fat frying, but it worked well with about a 1/2" depth of oil and turning the fish when required.

When I had my sailboat we used to catch Calico B*** out at Santa Cruz island off the SoCal coast.
Fillet em, cook em in the beer batter.

Way better than the fish & chips we've bought at various places here in the states.

If I remember right, the beer batter bit is in the "Hokey *** Cookbook."

The batter is no big deal, some flour, toss in some beer until consistency is about right, sprinkle on some paprika & start cooking.... [IMG]

Don't get me started - next we'll be discussing the finer points of black pudding!

And since we're talking about breakfast, what's with baked beans, mushrooms, & fried tomatoes with your eggs? Don't get me wrong, I like it, they just don't go together! And if your toast isn't crunchy enough, let's deep fry it too! [IMG]

Speaking of deep frying leads me to Scotland - the land of deep fried everything (mars bar? pizza?) now wots THAT all about? [IMG]

    It's all good!

Congrats dude. I'm not understanding the front and back spark plugs you're talking about, I thought you had a V8 in your toadster.

When i lived in England we had names for all the chippies, we had The Boris Karloff Chippy, because the guy that owned it looked like him.

My favorite was The NippY Chippy, not because it was cold, but the comeley l*** behind the counter had big jubblies, wore no bra and was in a constant state of turgidity.
