I'd go for it. Do it if that's what you want.

A friend has a Motor City Flathead-built 296 c.i. with Flowmasters. Sounds great. Go for it.

  6. I've run four different style mufflers on my 32 roadster.

Glass-pack looking turbo-muffs, the ones with the dents, too loud, way too loud.

Glass-packs, sounded great for two weeks, got a bit noisier, sounded ok.

Glass packed turbo-muffs, sounded great for two weeks, got noisier, great sound for 5-6 years, then got even noisier.

Two chamber FlowMasters, noisy right off the bat, ok sound, the short tailpipes helped get away from the tinny FM sound the late pickups end up with.

Added an H-pipe, more for sound attenuation than a performance gain.
Sounds much better, took a lot of the low frequency rumble out, still noisy and got worse when I added megaphone tips.

My main problem is lack of room underneath for anything except an about 22" glass-pack or two chamber FM.

I run three chamber FM's on my 2002 SuperCrew Ford - true duals - and they sound great.
    A lot like a back-in-the-day steel/glass-pack.

I'd run em on the roadster if I could.

Nice thing about the FM's is that they are long lived with their heavier sheetmetal and open chambers with no glass to blow out.

Another muff I'd run on the roadster if it would fit is the Hemi Muffler.
Quiet and they have a touch of sound that tells you there's something under the hood.

Provided you really do have something under the hood....

i love the basic 40 series i put em' on EVERYTHING i get...the most impressive sounding setup i ever had was the dual i had on my 67' chevy truck with a NASTY !!! 327 holy crap it sounded good.....but i caint decide if i do go with them on the flathead if i wanna go duals or a single in dual out.I can't help but think that my flathead just doesn't have the cubes to push duals. What do ya'll think ?

50'custom, the best thing you can do for your flattie is put duals on it. They really need to breath.

Hell I am too tight to buy Flowmasters so I built my own out of stainless for free. They sound just as good and didnt take long to put together. But 3" two chamber exhaust with turn downs was loud as fuck! Especially with a huge cam and an ass load of compression, my car would set off alarms while idling through a parking lot.

But I will say this, my dads stock flattie sounds killer through the factory exhaust on his shoeboxes I bet they would sound awesome through the flows.

Flowmasters just sound too "tinny" for me. I prefer Brockman steel packs for my flatheads.

I have a Studebaker (6 cyl.) flathead with DUAL Flowmasters! I made the split headers out of two old exhaust manifolds, and they are 3 + 3 all the way back, no crossover. Sounds like a V8, but still runs like a small half-dozen...

I had smitty's on my flatty, sounded throaty, and old school, in my opinion flowmasters sound to "wanna be cool," all the soccer mom's have them on their lifted Excursions

A friend of mine has Flowmasters on his blown 8BA flatty and it has a nice gentle "rumble"
without the "rap" of a Smithey's or Brockman. Intimidating, but not loud.

search youtube for 1940 1936 1934 exhaust - I've got a couple of videos of a few diff systems (mostly brockman's)...limited access right now or I'd post the links myself. Or search for flat ernie...

Don't know about a flatty but the guy that had my Ranchero before me put a killer exhaust system in it, Duel Flowmasters with a h pipe, he spent a lot of money on the system he said. I hate it. I mean it has a great sound and just loud enough but it doesn't sound like a y-block should to me. People at stop lights ask me if I have a 5.0 Mustang engine in it.
