I need to repair the rear fenders on a 40 coupe and am wondering who makes the best patch panels. Any help? Note - the rust damage is at the rear edge of the fenders, the front edge that meets the running boards is okay.
I've never seen that section avaiable as a patch panel. The front section that ties into the running board is available..... although requires some fitting. The piece you need is not that hard to make. As a matter of fact, I dragged some terrible '39 fenders into my high school metal shop and told one of my less-than-inspired grade 12 students that he would fix one since he couldn't come up with his own idea for a project. The rear section was thin, pin-holed and crumpled. I showed him how to hammer and dolly the rough shape back in, make good paper templates, and cut replacement pieces from 18 ga cold-rolled. My English Wheel was unavailable so he had to pound the compound curve into the panels on a convex stake anvil. A little shrinker work and he hammer welded the pieces into place with oxy-acet. Does that inspire you to have a bash at it?
I think you're right Tinmann - I've looked and it appears that no one makes the panel I need. Plan B coming up....
