Customs Any other 1961 Fords out there??

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by vintageauto, May 21, 2009.

  1. A lot of people tell me that 1961 Fords are fairly scarce. I have a 1961 Fairlane that was originally from the Left Coast. It is a 390, 3 on the tree. Painted in the original Light Blue, lowered, Flowmasters, Ghost Flames (can you see them?)They are across the hood to the back of the doors. I actually looked at the car twice before I seen the flames... Great ride with this car,. It had 17" Billet Cragars when I got it. Now it has Americans, more of a period correct look. Thanks for lookin. Let me know whats out there.

    Yep!
I have a 61 Galaxie "Club Victoria" Project that I'm working on. Just in the middle of freshening up a 390 for it.
I've found parts other than tailights seem to be pretty tough to come by. I've been looking for a decent set of door handles, and the tin between the bumper and body for a while. I looked for quarter patches for quite a while, and finally bought some 62 pieces that I'll have to modify to fit. I go to several big swaps a year, and rarely see any parts for them. Even places like Dearborn Classics don't offer much for them.
Luckly mine's a 75,000 mile 2 owner car that's straight and clean for the most part other than the lower quarters, and the chrome stainless and original interior are real nice. Plan is a late 60's look with some ET's and pinstripe whitewalls, Tach on the dash and a couple of vintage "class champion" decals from the local dragstip in the quarterwindows for now.....
Your front is dechromed just like I plan to do mine! They look a lot cleaner that way.

Well I have a 2 dr post. Model 62? I believe. shes really straight and 99.9% rust free being a Tucson car all her life. 223 cubes of rompin stompin pushing the guts out of a fordomatic 2 speed. The 351c/c-6 is getting freshened up and will go in soonly.
Really a basic mobile. Gloss black with skinny whitewalls and red rims with dog dishes from another ford. I parted out another Galaxie and got the factory A/C and many other parts as these are rather hard to come by. for Body and rubber stuff, Mac's has been beddy beddy good to me. Love em and cant wait to drive her again.

here is my brothers project. he bought it with the roof cut off (some ones poor mans convert), it was originally a box top hardtop. he came across a starliner roof and has pieced together all the glass and what not, now he needs to put it all back together to make it work:eek:
it has a factory 312 y-block and he put a 4 speed behind it. he bought a house recently so its on the back burner for now.

  7. They're out there, just mostly rotting in junkyards I think, Ford built a good 600,000 of them. We have one on the lot and no one much seems to care. A local guy has one that's done up with the gasser look - straight axle, high in the front, big motor - beyond that, I can't think of the last one I've seen outside of the junkyard. And even those are getting scarce, a lot of yards I used to go to have scrapped out.

  8. Just finished a Fairlane 2-Door Sedan with 223 inliner.

  9. Your '61 looks great. I've never seen it around the area. If you can make it we are having a car show at the M&T Bank in Hampstead tomorrow 5/23, (8-3) with free entry. My father will have his '61 hi-po Starliner and I'll have my '64 Galaxie there. Hope you can make it.

  10. Thanks for the input...There was a 61 Starliner on the Goodguys circuit a couple of years ago. It was built is Pittsburgh. It got a lot of press, but disappeared??? Thanks again, Keep em coming...they all look great.

I can still remember looking through the sales brochures with my Dad picking out the features he wanted on the Four Door Hardtop he ordered. I was ten years old and got to pick the red interior to go with the black exterior. Took my drivers test in that car six years later. Had an asshole in a Corvair hit me head on a year later. New front fenders grill and hood and it was good as new.

  12. 63's are Kool also..I had a fastback....sold it to my Dad and he ruined it.....LOL

  13. Hey Phartman...your 61 looks great!! with good mileage to boot!!

I've thought about doing that with mine. Was it a tough coversion? From looking at the parts/assembly manual, It doesn't look like it would be to tough of a job. Just cut it at the seams.... I REALLY like the starliners!
I bought the boxtop because it was priced right, and complete. I had a 62 ragtop that went down the road, and I thought that was tough to find parts for. The 61 is even worse!

61 falcon here 118k original except someone rattlecanned it black in it's past hopefully to have it cleaned up and painted and all that one day...

  16. You know, that little 223 DOES get good mileage. The very nice folks at Clay Smith ground me a 265 cam and it has the little 390 Holley. The cam perked up the motor, but it is probably getting around 20 mph on the Interstate if I don't horse around. I have a 3-speed with overdrive 4th for highway cruising. The trans came out of a Ford van. Everybody expects that big block to be in there and they are surprised when the hood goes up. As expressed elsewhere on the HAMB, ain't no crime to run an inline!!!!

I found that the neighbor has a 61 with a starliner roofline that I noticed the otherday while dirt bikin. It liiked to be behind a bunch-o-stuff and I'll find out more soon. I need another car. Especially like one I allready have. Can I get a shot to fix this? I gotta get a car runnin for therapy.

  18. I totally agree with the "racey" look of the Starliners. But the back window of the sedans is just downright funky, and that attracted me. Looks to me like Ford had a bunch of leftover windshields and stuck them in backwards on the sedans to make a rear window. The glass is HUGE. I bought an extra and that sucker is heavy.

  19. My father had a medium blue Fairlane 500 4-door with a 223/OD, bought used in '65 from the Ford dealer in Ashland, NE. I remember sitting in the salesman's office getting a small roll of 5-flavor Life Savers to keep me quiet while they took care of the paperwork. That engine barely lasted another year or so before the 223 came out of the Sea Foam Green/White '54 Customline that I loved to death (Astra-Dial, engine-turned dash trim, trunk lid handle and the grille caught my eye as a 5-year old!). The car's still sitting on my uncle's farm but has been flooded out, windows knocked out and roof stomped in. Imagine how my wife would react if I dragged it home.

Now if you want to talk about rarely seen, I was leaving Lowe's at 75th-Dodge in Omaha yesterday over lunch, pulled up alongside a CHERRY pale blue-green '60 Fairlane 500 4-door with black CA plates, correct dog-dish caps and a driver in his 30's or so. Oooh, I'm dyyyy-in...

  20. The Forgotten Years for Ford...1960 and 1961. That's something that I hear from the parts people quite frequently.

  25. Burfield, you're killin' me, you're killin' me. Looked and couldn't find a '61 Ranch anywhere. Found a few More-Doors that people claimed were Ranch Wagons, but that ain't it. We want pics, post 'em man. Inquiring minds need to know!!!
