I need info and pictures of how to split wishbones and use the stock spring out front. How far back of the axle to pie cut the bone. I have a 39 axle and a 24" wide frame. thanks for help and pictures----homebrew
Bending the spring hanger only changes the angle of the spring, not the axle, which is what he is after ....I think. Pie cut the bone just a little back from where it meets the front casting. As for setting the correct angle for the spring hangers after you split the bones........... Maybe measure the angle of the bones un-split from the axle, roemove the spring, then split them, tack in bungs, tack them in place on your frame, measure the angle from the axle again, then make up a simple jig and bend them to the new angle ????????????
Will what bend far enough? The spring hangers, sure they will I have seen it done on a few cars. Someone will chime in with some pics, there is a really nice chrome one. Sorry all my pics are at work
'36 3w has it right. Split the bones and do your mounting work. Then heat the spring perches and bring them back into alignment, parallel to the centerline of the frame. Frank
I think what i want is to leave the spring alone and to pie cut the bone about 6" behined the pin thru the axle to bones then bend the bone out and weld it. ????
No man dont pie cut it do as said just heat and take adjustable wrench and bend the spring perch, dont you think your tires are going to clear ?I had a roadster that wanted to rub on hard turns,
Very interested in this thread as I have a split 41 bones with a drop spring, but I am having the same dilemma I was thinking about just keeping the rear portion of the bones just wide enough to clear the drive line, but I would love to have it all the way out parallel to the froward section of my frame. I was thinking about bending the bones with just heat (no pie cuts) right behind my front tire, I also thought about bending the spring horns any thoughts?
This has me curious now. Whay do you want to move the bones all the way out to the frame? Is there something other than driveline clearance that you want to achieve? The wish bone is designed to work best in stock form, closely followed by a minimal split for clearance. As I understand the only good reason for moving them out to the frame is to get the car lower without the frame resting on the bones. As far as bending the bones, I would be far more confident bending the forged spring hangers at the front than bending the tubing behind the axle or pie cutting and re-welding. I think it is a safer solution structurally and keeps everything looking more like it was designed. I could be wrong. Pete
I agree with you the only reason I was considering pulling the bones all the way out was just for the look the engineer in me wants to leave them close so I have less to bend on the spring hangers. I will need to cut the frame a bit to clear the bones but that it not a problem as the frame needs more work in the area anyway.
I just took a 40 Ford front end apart. Came out of a car that saw a lot of road service. The wishbones were split and pie cut just behind the head. Then the welds were reinforced with plates. Not something I would do. But clearly doable. Ch***is engineering makes a kit that splits the bones to clear the drive line but keeps the mounts as tight as possible under the car. A bit of tweaking is required to get the spring perches parallel. But the impact on spread is negligible.
I'm sorry but that's not right. Pie cut your bones, right behind the weld to get the desired angle, and re-weld, (properly). The drag link should be maybe 3/8" to 1/2" above the slit wishbones, not under, as shown in this picture.
