History Name THREE Current INDY 500 Drivers....

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by The37Kid, May 23, 2009.

  1. Marco- Too much pride not to.
AJ Foyt IV- Too much pressure not to.

But then let's look at what it took to get there. You had to survive all those short track races without a cage in midgets and sprints. That brings the possible number down severely.

I enjoy watching it on TV each year. I never miss the pageantry before the race and hearing Jim Nabors sing "Back Home Again in Indiana". I watch as much of the qualifying and practice as I can. Wouldn't be a Memorial Day weekend without it.

I have watched it since I was a kid. My family wasn't into racing at all,so I had to fight for the TV to watch it. I have always watched it and probably always will. I get up early to watch F1 also! It will never be like it was in the old days. I'm just glad the open-wheel battle is over.

$20 general admission to the Indy 500 is still the best value in motor racing. Worldwide. If you can't have a good time watching the 500 from the cool gr*** of the spectator mounds, I honestly question your gearhead credentials. It is as american as apple pie. And as gearheads, it's our slice of america.

There's always gonna be somebody looking for a reason to quit being a fan. Congratulations on all you guys finding yours.

yep 20 bucks is cheap, but what do you get? a 33 car field with half a dozen with a chance to win.apple pie is american, but certainly not the field for the 500. it is what it is, not what it was. that being said i'll still be watching it, just not with the same excitement as the 1960's.

I can certainly think of one. Davey Hamilton wouldn't have much problem.

Me too. I've either watched or listened to the 500 for over 50 years. Back in the late 50s I worked part time in a gas station (remember them?) and a few weeks after the 500 a local auto parts jobber invited all of their customers to watch a film of the race in their back room. And to a bunch of grease monkeys that was better than a stag movie. :p Memorial Day weekend wouldn't be the same without Monaco, Indy and the 600.

You get to carry your lawn chair and a cooler and basically have a day at the beach on the back stretch spectator mounds. Where the breeze blows cool and doesn't smell like sweaty people frying on aluminum bleachers and you can hog all the room you can cover. Where the ball state college kids get falling down drunk, the hardbelly girls show off their navels, and hugebelly dudes smash cans in the fence til it reads "Show Us Your T"

There's a lot of races and a lot of racing experiences. But nothing compares to the quality of that experience at that price. Nothing. Whether or not you like the indy racing league, gotta respect the 500.

    Enjoy the race!

He drove Jack Clark's Taco Bell car to a semi-final finish at the 1993 Southern Nationals, his top speed was 299 MPH.

yep at the milwaukee mile a week later i only do the infield. seeing we can bring our own food and beer it affordable. sometimes we even watch the race, but you can only do it for about 5 or 6 laps in the corner due to their speed and my ability to get dizzy.

  17. I still have a crush on Janet Guthrie, got any bikini shots of her from back in the day? ******* would be fine too.

If you read Janets book, she tells what it was like back when she raced and all the BS she had to put up with. She just wanted to race....no drama or fluff!

Overall driving yes, Sara is like a female AJ she can drive anything but Danica has the edge in Indy cars.

Growing up in a USAC family which were USAC officials, sponsors of many racecars including Indy cars and promoters of the Milwaukee Mile I know the cost of running a team.

Sara Fisher being an owner/driver I would love to see her win Sunday just to shove it in the face of the big dollar teams.

Still waiting for those bikini shots of Janet Guthrie

  24. I started loosing interest when the engines moved to the back. My father actually shed tears when Vucky was killed in'55, that's how important it was to him.
The roadsters were what Indy was all about. I have a sprint car race to go to tomorrow, but I will still record and watch later. It seems almost blasphemous not to.

When I said my piece about Al and Bobbie I had completely forgotten about the Mears. I always loved Rick, he could drive anything with wheels and was a genuine hotrodder at heart. Also cheered for Danny Ongais, hated seeing him have that horrible wreck. But nothing on this earth sounded as good as a Novi at full song.

The end of the Roadsters, belowing Offies and screeming Novies. Remember listing to the radio in '50 at 6 years old ,never missed listening or watching the tube untill the 80s. Now I care less. I think it was better listening to it on the radio.

When Tony George screwed things up it was heard from Foyt--Hell in a year or so you won't know who the hell is next to you on the track. Well Its Indy but from my view it has lost its cl*** and then there is the multi mega bucks it takes and that removes it from just about everys ones league. No more Ford/Chev wars or knowing all the drivers prior to the event. This is Progress?
