I have heard leave it in ongoing and i have heard only use for break in and then switch to "other" ( non diesel - HD non zinc oils or synthetic ) need advice
I don't know of any reason not to keep running it, I do with no ill effects. I know that some of the blends do not have as much of a detergent action as non diesel oils. The detergents keep all the dirt suspended in the oil instead of letting it settle into the pan or crevices. As long as you keep up in maintanance and change the oil often you should see no ill effects.
Rotella was reformulated last summer, the ZDDP content was greatly reduced if not gone, better look for a different break in oil.
I have 2 new engines used Shell Rotella in both with GM breakin lube. have almost 1000mi on one, will use reg oil with ZDDP additive for oil changes. At $9.95 per change it is a lot cheeper than rebuilding them again.
I hadn't realized that Rotella had changed recently. My machinist recomends STP oil treatment as it still contains a healthy dose of ZDDP when using new oils.
refresh my memory....what is the ZDDP content suposed to be? (Getting ready to break in a new mill here shortly)
Cheveron is keeping Dello 400 out in both the CI and CJ rating. The CI - the one you want - is labled Dello 400. The newer CJ rated is labled Dello 400 LE. Both available in 15-40, 10-30, or 30. No reason not to run it all the time. And for what it's worth, the WalMart Universal 15-40 house oil is CI rated and on several test sites gets good marks for ZDDP.
Red-Line refuses to conform. Use them. It's all I use in the stuff I care about. My semi gets Delvac and 2 gallons of Lucas oil stabilizer every 20k.
Wal-Mart also has Accel brand 10W-40 SF rated oil, has zddp(the new SM doesn't). AutoZone recently, last time I checked, has Coastal brand CI-4 diesel oil.
