  3. We were ready to send the car to the painter. But first we wanted to get the Ol' Merc running. We knew it would be easier to move around if it could run. We finished wiring the engine, made and installed the fuel lines, filled the engine and transmission with oil, and started to fill the radiator with coolant, when the unexpected happened........

    All the plumbing and wiring has been completed.

    ...... the coolant started pouring out of the p***enger side exhaust manifold. We had a leak. The engine had been magnafluxed and had come back ok. The billet crank and main bearing caps had been installed as had the forged h-beam rods and forged pistons. Everything should have been ready to go, but now we have a leak. What could have gone wrong you ask? We were about to find out.

    I decided it was time to order that flathead block pressure tester from Speedway Motors. It arrived within 2 days. We installed the tester as outlined in the directions, and what did we find? Not a thing. Pressure held steady and did not drop. Then we filled the motor with water and guess what? It started leaking again. We ran our boroscope through all the p***ages and could find nothing to indicate where the leak came from.

    The decision was made to send the original block from the car and the new motor down to the engine shop when we discovered where the leak was coming from. Water was leaking through one of the threaded holes in the block into the middle exhaust port on the p***enger side. Unfortunately, magnafluxing would not discover this problem. Only a combination of water and pressure testing would detect it.

    Live and learn folks. Don't just ***ume magnafluxing the block will detect all potential problems! If you are going to be playing with a lot of flatheads, spend the $249.95 for the block pressure tester from Speedway. This would have saved a lot of time and expense!!!

  4. We sent the car minus the engine and transmission to the painter on May 7th. We were advised he would need it for 6 weeks. He'd better hurry as he's going to end up having my custom 51 Mercury Coupe within 3-4 weeks and that car has to be at the Detroit Autorama next March. Here's the link to the coupe build;

    In the meantime we'll get the engine in order and have it ready for when the car comes back. We have plenty of other work at JDH Rod & Custom to keep us busy until then. Next up I'll post the pictures of the 40 Ford Pickup build we're doing, along with some other goodies.

    Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, the painter will be taking lots of photos of the work in progress as he preps and paints the mordoor. I'll post them as soon as I have them.
