first off the batteries in the camera died on the way up to virginia city, for the mugrosos show, so this is going to be good 'ol fashioned journalism of the typing kind only. My lady, myself and two other pals of mine decided friday that we were going to head up to virginia city NV, to check out "the battle born showdown" put on by the mugrosos car club. For those of you that dont know anything about virginia city, its an old west town located about 30 min. southeast of reno up in the mountains, and home of the historic "BUCKET O BLOOD SALOON". VERY cool location for an event if your car can handle a major altitude change. We rolled into town on saturday, and found the show. wasnt very hard to find seeing the entire town consists all of but 5 to 10 streets and only one way in and out of town. Ive got to say that this show has the potential to grow into something VERY VERY VERY awesome over the next few years. I mean, a car show in a historic old west town?! Its awesome!! The chop tops played, there was a pin up contest, a few raffles, and about 150 cars +? bumped into BREWSIR and rick from the swanx, afew of the bay area bomshells were there too, and they all seemed like they were having a awesome time as well. The vibe of the show was really kicked back and relaxed, with a lot of cool people hanging out and enjoying themselves. ALL in all, i would really reccomend this show to anyone that can make the trip next year. so, after some wondering of he car show, some gambling, some old west history museums, and some drinks we headed home to get some sleep for the lucky bastards car clubs' "MAY MYSTERY RUN" the next day on sunday. Woke up at 6am, got dressed and headed out to meet up in cotati CA, at the old washoe tavern. arrived at the spot to about 730am, to a parking lot of about 80 pre war hot rods and 20 post war-pre 1960 customs. (if that made any sense) The run was organized by hamb member, lucky bastard, and all around awesome fella REDBEARD. The endurance run was open to all pre 1960 traditional hot rods and customs. I believe it was to be about a 150 mile trip all together, going through some of the bay areas most gorgeous backroads. indeed...it was all that..... AND MORE! The pre war cars took one route and the post wars took another. Both routes intersected past eachother 3 or 4 times during the run. We met up for lunch at a killer burger joint called....toms automatic refresher?...dont remeber the name. (bad journalist). the parking lot of this place was packed to its capacity with the cars attending the run. traffic was grinding to a hault with passers by admirring the cars that had rolled into town. this place also had some killer chilli cheese fries.Anyways... met up with some more fellow hamb members as well, and after about 30 min, we were all on our way again. the trip went all over the place!!!!! it was SO FANTASTIC! winding through the napa wine country, through petaluma, through healdsburg, past infineon raceway. through hills, over mountians, over rivers, along cliffs, along easy roads and along not so easy roads, and finally, both routes, ending up at a spot called rio nido. It was kinda a 50's-esque public swimming pool/lounge/grille/resort kinda spot. visited with old friends, made some new ones and after afew hours it was time to return home. i can 100% say that i had the time of my life today on the may mystery run!!! BIG HATS OFF TO YA DAVE, BEST MEET/RUN/SHOW IVE BEEN TO IN A LONG TIME, IF EVER. hope some pictures surface of this endurance run....
Damn ....just got home from the best show I've been to in a long time...I'll have to help you out a little with pics tomorrow (unless Rick beats me to it!) Did I mention...great show??? We arrived at the Ramada Friday after an awesome 250 mile drive through some great nor cal scenery and Nevada high desert...the 57 ran great and only at about 7000 ft above sea level did she act up at all. Anyway we arrived and parked and never had to move the cars (well....until we came in drunk as skunks at about early o thirty....you know bars never have to close in Nevada right???) multiple bands, beautiful weather ,gambling and there was a shuttle that takes you anywhere in town for tips...did'nt even have to walk drunk!!! Saturday my wife and kids took a 100 year old steam train ride to a mining town, did a little gold panning, and ate some great local food. I forgot to mention this is the most dog friendly town I have ever ,ever been to......we took our boxer (who was welcome at the Ramada with just a $20 fee) all over town and even on the train ride. I ran into a bunch of guys from all over...2 or 3 from when I was in Mexico on the ElDiablo run.....and Jake who I had met at the lonestar roundup years ago...damn I'm glad these guy have good memories because I don't. Anyway....I will post pics tomorrow. Thank you to all the fellas that put on this show....I will be back!
Maybe next year i can attempt the feat of going to both of these events.max good to meet ya and hats off to ya for making the huge trip in all directions!as for me it was the may mystery run,the most fun i have had all year(except for the last one as a passenger)NOTHING beats driving the hell out of your ridelike we did this weekend.Litlle did we know that the part of the route we came over on was the beginning of the run this morning, wich by the way made it twice as fun!Actually we drove back through 116 and back to the beginning of the route all over again, but continued all the way through berryessa back to woodland.Without issue.Dave you really did a great job on this and of course to anyone who helped you as well, thank you. Also let Todd know we really appreciated the offer to stay, and we are sorry we didnt get to say later when we left.He did a great job taking us through the post war journey!THANKS pics coming soon!i gotta get some sleep!!!
Glad to heat that its a cool show. Damn shame about it being on the same date as Santa Maria, as it was a great show as well.
Would that have been Taylor's Refresher in St. Helena? If so, that is a cool place and definitely good food. Man, if I can get my '50 truck together by next year, I would love to do a run like that. Thanks for the story and looking forward to seeing some pics of this cruise.
best drive i've had in a long time ...if you missed it you gotta do the next one ..they were meant to be driven , damit......what a great day .......
Actually I think that is kind of the point....I know I didn't want to go back to Santa Maria after last year. Next year I may try to do both the battle born show and Dave's run ....as we were pretty wiped out Saturday nite and could have came down the mountain, gotten some sleep and hit the reliability run on Sunday (and still got home in time for me to go to work all nite ) Anyway...here's some pics from the show in Virginia City...
Well heres my 2 cents.....This show was awesome....I just got my car running the night before,no floor and no windshield, but I still made it. Its a little nerve racking driving your car for the first time thru the winding roads with a 92" wheelbase, a locker rearend, and a still needs adjustment 4 speed. So we pull into the show, park, and just was super impressed with how organized this show was. Cool cars,COLD BEER,food, bands, and met alot of very cool down to earth people. Was going to just hangout for a few hours but ended up staying the night. Had a blast, walking distance from show to the Bloodbath Saloon, then the bands at the Washoe Club, and getting spanked at pool all night,to walking around in the cemetary at 4am with my girl and Nikki and Kelly who talked us into it. AHHH the power of beer.... All the Mugrosos, the Dead End Cruisers,The Coffins,The HellRazors, The Leftovers, and all others we met were super cool and just had a blast....Heres a few pics before my camera took a dump....
more.. oh and there I am drowning in the sun before the Leftovers invited me to there shaded area and introduced me to they're cooler of never ending beer.....
Great pics, the wife and I Love Virginia City and the Carson area, haven't been there in a few years sounds like a road trip is in order. Maybe Hot August Nights and a day or 2 there also. Michael
thats a real shame. West Coast Kustoms and Penny worked hard for many years to provide a good show for all of us to enjoy. Through no fault of their own the show has changed. To put a show on the same day as another show or even close to another show is just a slap in the face to all those people that worked so hard for so long. Its also fucking with someones source of income, in this case Penny's. Why would anyone want to do something to intentionally harm another show? or someone elses income stream? particularly when it could just as easily be on another date that didnt conflict.
Didn't affect their income at all.....I didn't like the show in Santa Maria and wasn't going back anyway....as well as a bunch of other folks apparently. Call it free interprise, business or just good old America we get to do what we want. No disrespect for Penny and Rich as I really enjoyed the old show....just not the new one. Sorry you feel like a show thats probably 500 miles away is causing a conflict...or a one day reliability run thats probably 300 miles away is.....what about the fellas in Ohio or maybe Florida??? having a Memorial day show...would that be OK with you? To quote someone on here... "RELAX, Its just a Hot Rod Show. "
now, i dont believe that, either the virginia city show or the may mystery run was a show to take away from santa maria at all. i think that they were just two awesome local meets (and not so local as far as battle born) For those of us who either, couldnt afford the trip all the way to santa maria, diddnt get hotels in time, or just wanted to do something different. i couldnt afford the trip to santa maria, nor could my pals that went on the weekend with me that we just had. we all pitched in for gas and went in one car on BOTH days to each spot. the nice thing about the may run was that it was local, small and kicked back. like i said earlier, i highly doubt either show was out on in protest or to take away from anybody elses show.
I hope so. Would have loved to run up there with ya guys... The Swanx in Reno? Fuggetaboutit ahhhh Nevada, the land of vice and freedom.
Dam another good one missed. I really like Ricks new hood ornament, is he gonna hsave it later or keep it? Next year I will have to meet you guys there. To many adult family type obligations this year Damn
AHAHAHAHAHA! i donno...rick kinda seems like the "au-natural", leave it stock type! hahahahahaha! i kid, i kid.
The May Mystery Run was great! I drove out with MEDDLER1 and another one of out buddy's caravaned out, we drove about 400 miles total including the drive to and from santa rosa back to Davis. My car made it without incident and really let me put faith into my car, I have never really driven it out of town besides to sacramento. Thank you Redbeard and Lucky Bastards car club for putting it on, It was a BLAST and I can't think of a better way to spend my weekend. I took a bunch of pics i'll will upload them soon...
You will have to go next year, this show was a blast. There were lots of people at this for you to fall on.
I see they kept all you hoodlums confined to the Red Light District/Chinatown area. Hot rods and Virginia City, two of my favorite things. Too bad I'm all the way across the country.
That was not the intention at all. We all know and can't debate the fact that the town of Paso Robles contributed a great deal to the vibe of the original Paso show. When it was moved to Santa Maria it just didn't feel the same...it's not anybody's fault...it just wasn't the same. So what does a real hot rodder do when he/she needs something that nobody has? They build it themselves in their own back yard...and that's what we tried to do. Disrespect, metaphorical face-slapping and income-fucking were never our intentions. As far as having it on a different weekend...we chose Memorial Day because we weren't going to Santa Maria anyway (neither were most folks who came to the BBSD) and wanted to give people enough travel time so they could enjoy the show without having to worry about getting home in time to go back to work. I was unaware that Santa Maria had a monopoly on Memorial Day. I guess the bottom line is that if people wanted to go to Santa Maria...they would have. Our intentions were to have a cool show in a cool town with cool cars, cool people and good music. If that hurts anybody's feelings, were sorry.
http://picasaweb.google.com/sixpics/BattleBornShowdown?authkey=Gv1sRgCOfzsaHapIDVsAE&feat=directlinkWe drove to Paso for years and loved it, but it's gone. Santa Maria isn't the same, although the pics from there are great. Grass and trees are a +! VC is a great place for a show and it's someone else's turn to drive. The Dead End Cruisers & the Mugrosos did a good job and it was fun to see so many people support them. Thanks and it was good to see ya!
Looks like it was a good time! Woulda been there if I wasn't in Hawaii. I'm lookin' forward to driving my shoebox up there next year. Virginia City is way cool.
