    my brother is convinced there's some way of getting the '62 sticker off of the '61 sticker without damaging either one,does anyone have any idea how to do this? :confused:
    i think he's dreaming...:rolleyes:

  2. Sure look like restored plates to me, but I only have about 10 sets so I may not know anything:rolleyes:

    The vehicle year sticker is registered to your plate, but only to lock in what year the plates can be used for. In other words, now that your '61 plates are in the system as a 1961 set should you decide to sell them, they can only go onto another '61 year vehicle. It's not like they bar code them or anything, all they do is verify correct color and year for the vehicle being registered.

    I haven't had any complaints about usability or ability to register.

    You're correct in noticing they've been "restored".
    Someone repainted them,and if you look at them up close you'll see the flaws. (thick paint,letters/numbers not crisp)
    I can have them done "correct" starting at $60 per plate(!)

    Also,the info about "transferring" them to another vehicle is spot on.They can only be put on another '61 vehicle.

    I did look into the "repro" stickers,but the $15 spent for the real-deal was cheaper than a DMV employee on a bad day.

  4. I understand...

    I have sold about 30 stickers thus far on various forums and have had no problems with usability...Sticker prices are all over the map, you did VERY well for $15, as the original '61 stickers I have were purchased between $50-$75 each for mint condition stickers.

    Wow.. there is a lot of bad information on this thread. There is no problem using restored plates and no problem using repro stickers.
    I don't know this guy, but his repro stickers shown are tons better than the other repro stickers I have seen, the clearity of the CA Seal is so much cleaner than the others on the market. If they are delived as they look it is a really good deal cost and quality wise.

    Also, you guys are right, once a YOM plate is ***igned a year it cant be switched to a differant year car, that ****s because good NOS plates are so expensive... and if you sell the car out of state you cant use them on another year car if you buy one.

    Todd, hope this works out for you... I register YOM plates all the time and will keep your info.

  6. Thanks for the vote of confidence Hyfire...

    Your '59 tags are in the mail, BTW...you'll be happy with them I'm sure.

    The stickers are selling really well. The '59's are surprisingly popular...

  7. I think a lot of folks are asking about price and availability from this discussion thread.

    Check out my for sale thread for pricing and availability. I just did a second run, so I am covered on all years right now. Here's the link:

    Yes. The registration will come back as reflectorized which would indicate that the wrong plate is on the car.

    How is it that you don't still have to run 2009 stickers on your YOM plate? How are the police to know your vehicle has an up to date registration (when casually following you/not having to call it in).

    The CHP is notorious for looking for out of date stickers, cracked windshields, etc. and other red flags on freeway sweeps.

  11. The DMV is supposed to provide you with small aluminum tabs that hold the current year/month stickers to verify current registration. A lot of folks just stick the current stickers in a clear spot on the plates.

    Getting past the variety of *****s at the DMV field offices does not mean you are home free. I've heard dozens of ridiculous stories of how the "expert" at the field office was POSITIVE about the rules (like 1939 plates should be black, or the numbers on your 1951 cars plates can only be used on a truck). The final say comes from the special processing unit in ****ramento, who often flunks idiotic suggestions from field offices. I have a few of Todd's stickers and they are clear, although I've never tried to use them. I don't know if the DMV tracks the serial numbers on the stickers and I doubt the re-pops change the numbers. p.s. I have DMV clear California sets from 1914 - 1969. PM me if interested.

    Well, that's not totally true. Vehicle code #4464 -<!-- #EndEditable --> <!-- #BeginEditable "section_content" -->No person shall display upon a vehicle a license plate altered from its original markings. <!-- #EndEditable -->
    <!-- #BeginEditable "addl_section_content" -->
    <!-- #EndEditable -->
    <!-- #BeginEditable "section_change_history" -->Added Ch. 1478, Stats. 1959. Effective September 18, 1959.

    A DMV official (a good friends mother was a Director for years) told me that this includes repainting but that it is not enforced as long as it looks identical to original, but that they could confi****e restored plates if they really wanted to.<!-- #EndEditable -->

    <!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="sec_number2" --><!-- InstanceEndEditable -->

    Got a quick question for you all about the YOM program. Can you get plates made from an online resource (plate maker web sites ect.), put a valid sticker on it and take it to the DMV to qualify for the program?? Or do they check the numbers on the old plates to make sure that they actually did exist at one point or another?

    For example, what I want to do, is get plates made with the numbers "80S RKL" in the original yellow/black 1962 YOM colors and I HAVE a legit 1962 Original Old Stock registration sticker with a valid number from the dmv. If I get the plates made, attach the 1962 DMV sticker and go to the DMV, will they accept?? Or will my plates and sticker be destroyed right in front of my face???

  15. I doubt the plates would be accepted, especially with an odd sequence like that. "They" can't destroy your property. Is RKL for a band?

    Thanks,
    Kurt

    PS- Your best bet is to call the Sacramento special plates office and ask them.

    Thanks Kurt. Ya, RKL is for a band. I played b*** in the band.

    I'm ***uming that an original sequence would be three letters and three numbers, am I right? Like "FTK 928". So if I made plates with the sequence "RKL 805" that could be accepted if an original 1962 registration sticker was attached??? I'm thinking that if I brought in spankin' new plates to the DMV, they would be very su****ous...................I wouldn't want to waste the registration sticker if I was denied on the spot.

    Has anyone ever tried to do this before? Make some plates that were "clear" with the DMV and registered the car YOM? Or brought in mint condition plates and been accepted by the DMV?? Hit me back if anyone knows about this.

    I'm thinking that I probably have to find an old plate and do it legit.

    When I went to the DMV they took photo copies of my YOM plates and sent the photo copies to the Sacramento office, it takes 30 to 60 days for the DMV to verify your plates are authentic, then you can go through the YOM registration process like normal. I guess you could go in and play stupid and see what happens.

  19. if it's a '56 like your name, then you don't get a sticker (only the new ones for month and year). if your vehicle is the same year as the plate you don't need a tab or sticker, my '47 has a '47 plate...but my '54 has a '51 plate with a '54 tab. i think '41 was the last for new plates for every year.

    also i was told by a dmv employee that my '36 plates had to be restored BEFORE i could register them, i went to a different dmv and it was no problem. i just did another yom and we were walked through the paperwork by a supervisor. they have to verify plate material (aluminum or metal), tab color, plate color, plate/tab year, p*** or comm, write in condition, write in letters/numbers, then check each catagory in the system for that plate config (comm, p***, cycle, there's like 4 or 5 of them).

  20. You might have a chance with RKL 805. You could try it, but you don't need to put your sticker on, you just need to show it to them. Or, another thing people have done is get new vanity plates and run 56 copies. That might work better for you.

    And, the original post in this thread is from a person making and selling stickers. How is that going, Todd?

    I'm going to keep recommending people call the Sacramento DMV special plates office. I'm gonna have to find the number so someone will actually call it.

    Actually people have not done this. California DMV will not issue personalized plates in a standard-issue sequence. This means you can't get "RKL 805" or any other LLL NNN or NNN LLL configuration.

    If the new repop plates are aluminum, they might not p*** when you bring them into the office. I've had them put a magnet on the plates to check.

    So,I've got a question: My '63 Galaxie 500 came with the original black plates,but the car hasn't been registered since 2008,but the plate matches what's on the ***le,what will I have to do when I register it under my name? Will it be a simple process like registering a normal car? I also need to know if there's threads on here explaining the process of restoring a set of black plates.

    Are you still offering your YOM registration stickers? If so, I need one for 1959. Thanks.
