Ok so a little advise is needed, I live in a town where you can see in other backyards so is it out of the ordanery to knock on a door and ask if the unibody is for sale or maybee a letter to the address. I know it would not bother me and i dont want people thinkin im scoping sh*t out in there back yard
I have door knocked for a few cars with good results, have a friend who does it all the time and he finds lots of deals that way,,have had it done to me,didnt like it much but nicely told them its not for sale and hoped and prayed they didnt come back and steal any parts,,so far so good, go for it,just be nice as possible, alll they can do is tell you no and to f-off,,,good luck
Why not? If your knock isn't welcome, you'll be told so, but most people don't mind courteous inquirys. Just don't appear by your initial actions or language suggesting that you are from the Nanny Society with some whiny inquiry about junk or clutter or such! No problem, that should re-inforce the premise that you'r a legit' car guy!
yep knock on the door ive done it dozens of times. ive bought many cars that way. i have bought over 30 gas pumps that way also. with the tattoos youd better put on a happy face & go alone. or bring a untattooed girl.
you never know , you might get capped by a tattooed from the neck down granny!! but go for it , dont be afraid , you might score!!
i live in small town alabama, got tats long hair , lomg beard, and i wear two earrings.i kinda tense some people up when i knock on the door but overall most people are pretty nice, just be nice and to the point. yes sir no maam them there people and you should be ok, i havent been shot at yet!!but i have found some good deals.
Ok i think i got enough nerve to go know, Wish me luck. I always wanted to ask my unkle to fly me around in his plane so i could really see whats back there...
All good advice. If I live in the same town I tell the people that and where I live. It kind of puts them at ease that they now know where I live too. Tattoos are all over these days so I think anyone with a tv is kind of used to that. Being polite and speaking clear English instead of some street gang slang goes pretty far too.
I got my 54 Bel Air by seeing it in a driveway with a flat tire (could tell been there a LONG time), knocked on the door and asked if they wanted to sell and the 81 year old man said yes, he wanted to sell it. So I bought it.
I never knock. It seems to not only make people feel uneasy, but is also puts people on the instant defense. I always leave a note instead with my name and phone number asking if the car may be for sale. It seems that I will get a call in a few days after they have had time to think about it. I have found MANY cars like this.
I have had a knockers a few times and it didn't bother me, actually met a few guys with the same interest as me. Just be nice and you never know it might work out for you.
When I knock on a door I step a couple of steps away, or down. You don't crowd the doorway or appear intimidating that way. Of course I'm old fat and bald too. Then I introduce myself with full name and area I live in, and inquire if the vehicle I see in the backyard might be available. If you,re worried about tatoos wear a longsleeved shirt. Good Luck, Mike.
And make sure you have the money to back it up! Maybe not bulging out of your pocket, but in your car or at home. Too many stories of "then he sold it out from under me" or "he decided to double the price". Polite, and ready. Some will want to chat, some will want it quick, so you gotta feel that.
I went and knocked and the older lady said that it was her late husbands and she would have to ask her son over seas. I gave her my phone number and told her to call any time... Now the bitchen part The hubby bought the truck new in 62 and stoped driving it when he went to vietnam... Its got to have low miles
you and those damn unibodys! there is some nice stuff sitting out there. found a 30-31 model AA sittn out there a few months ago... gauranteed it s still there
I have a flyer that I will leave "If you are interested in selling your car please give me a call" that sort of thing..and yes you will see lots of stuff flyin low and slow in a Piper Cub....
i've got tons of tattoos and i knock on doors all the time. if you're able to speak well enough, that makes up for the tats in their minds... i've bought a lot of cars by knocking on doors. all they can say is no.
I have done the door knock thing, and leaving a note. sometimes it goes my way. alot of times when they need to talk to the relatives, etc, it has sentimental value to them, or they talk up the price amongst themselves. I knocked on a guy's door that had a 62 Falcon sitting in the yard for at least the 10 years I've been driving past it. Its on a main road, see-thru fence. It must have freaked him out because he built a new wood fence within a week all around his place so nobody could see in. Just before he started on the fence, they moved the car off the property. All you can do is try. Leave her a note with your full name and phone #. if you don't hear from her, stop by in a few weeks and check. If no sale, move on. Perhaps stop by in a few months or so.
Only was met at the door with a guy pissed off holding a .45 once. After he said "NO!!!!!", and after I cleaned up the crap trickling down my leg, I drove home. So I say "go 4 it".
I have had many good deals from door knocking. I have scored many rare old collectables as well as some good cars and bikes. I don't look like I'm from the local church either, more like from zztop. It always helps if you turn up in a cool ride, also show a photos of some cars and or old stuff that you have scored and restored etc. If people know you are for real they will give you the time of day, but you might have to keep going back for a few years. I have kept calling on people for years or when ever I'm passing through, it has paid off. You have to put in the effort. Always carry cash and be ready to deal on the spot. It works check out my album pics. Good luck! I love the hunt! Johnny
I've been looking for a particular model car, circa 1974, like the one my wife had when we met. These were throw away cars but she loved it and wanted another one. I've been searching for almost 10 yrs. Then back in Feb I was on a Mopar website and a guy in Washington state posted a pic of all the snow in his backyard. Buried under the snow I could make out the shape of what I have been searching for, and it was even the same model and color!! I emailed the guy and the car arrived home this past saturday, so YES, go knock on them doors.
