My 235 is over heating at stops and at low rpm's. Once you get back up to speeds it cools off. If you start it up cold everything is fine till it gets to operating temp then it stars getting hot. I have checked everything that I can think of. only thing that I can find is a small pin hole in the radiator, any thoughts?

I had one that cracked the block from the exhaust into the water jacket. Overheated ike crazy, but there were no outward signs. A good radiator shop will have a gas-sniffer widget that they use to replace the radiator cap for a test. It tells you if there's exhaust g***es in the water. Give that a shot.

ok, i know you just rebuilt that 6 and i'm wondering if your timing and spark advance are good. my next question is the thermostat working properly.have you took it out and put it in hot water to see when it opens? too quick it'll heat up,not quick enough..really hot.

If it only runs hot at slow speeds and sitting still that would usually be an airflow issue but you probably have your original cooling system so maybe the radiator has become partially clogged and is due for an overhaul.

What is it in? what kind of fan?

Fresh rebuilds can tend to run hot under those cir***stances. Make sure the timing is right, check for exhaust gas in the coolant, make sure the radiator is sound and the fins aren't overly painted, bent, etc... and I usually run a 160 thermostat.

The timing and spark advance can cause it to get hot? And I will pull the thermostat and check it. Its in a 53 chevy car. I am running the stock radiator and fan.

I had problems with mine overheating and it was a combination of things. The bottom radiator hose that I got new did not have the spring in it so it would collapse and restrict the flow, And the timing was off.

53 car? is it the stock engine or a later 235 with the lower mounted water pump?
