funny about the gay pontiac on arnies car. different dealers would sponsor that car depending on what part of the country he was in.

PONCHOS! Now if I was't so involved with Chevrolet cars & parts, I'd be a Pontiac man....without a doubt. They built some of the prettiest and neatest cars of ANY of the auto-makers. But....what I really admire about them is the fact that they had the balls to build things, and even sneak things out, when many people considered performance (and musclecars) dead. Aluminum front end Super Duty 421 Catalina factory drag cars and even the famous Swiss-Cheese frame cars, now that was a wild idea. Many of those factory-built lightweight Super Dutys had build dates after the famous GM racing ban of mid-1963, but they built 'em anyway! How about those 12 (or 14) 1963 Super Duty 421 Tempests? That's possibly the wildest, neatest car ever produced during the musclecar era. Multiple-carbed GTO's (you couldn't get that on a Chevelle!), over the counter Ram Air V's, the large rear spoiler that is standard on all '70 Trans Ams required a very special COPO option code by the Chevrolet Division before it could even be fitted onto '70 Camaros for road racing, the infamous 1973-74 Super Duty 455 'Birds, one of the fastest, most impressive Musclecars ever made, never mind the fact that everybody else gave up two years earlier. You could still get a 455 in 1976 Trans Ams, even though Z-28's weren't even produced that year and 454's had gone extinct in Corvettes two years earlier in '74. Now, not everything they did was successful, but you gotta give them kudos for having the balls to try: the rear-engined Fieros, those ugly Aztek vans, the 2004-2006 GTO's (great cars actually). I realize that I've gotten into talking about newer iron that not real HAMB-friendly and for that I'm sorry, but please just show a little respect for the dead. (Bow head now).

well said! too bad the transmissions (especially the slim jims) didn't hold up, i think that's why we don't see as many pontiacs as chevys of the same era. you can't hurt those iron 'glides, but good luck finding someone to even look at a hydro...

  19. Also what other engine can propell a 3810 lb car to mid 12 second blasts with a $999 rebuild and $300 head grind which included new valve springs but no portwork with a stock TH350 and 3:73 gears. A Pontiac 400. My car does 12.56s at a measley 106 mph in the 1/4 and does 1.67 seconds 0-60 ft. Who says Pontiacs are expensive to build. As far as reliability, I've been beating on the same engine since 1991 and it still runs as good as it did when it was built. It also never gets past 175 degs in summer traffic and runs on pump gas.
Love them!!! Love the interchangability of parts, and like how they designed an engine that never had a different outside dimension. Thats why there are no big block or small block Pontiacs. The only difference was big journal and small journal mains. they were cast internally different as you cant bore and stroke a 326 block and make it a 455 as the cylinder walls on the smaller cubes were not as thick to be able to bore as big. But you can now buy stroker kits to turn a 400 into a 467 cid block. All for about $1500 fully balanced.
    How sweet is that.
Pontiacs are alive and kicking and are kicking some butt in the process. I believe there is a guy on the erformance years that has won the fastest legat street car on pump gas a couple years ago. His car broke a sprag in last years event. All the aftermarket companies stepping up in the last few years is just amazing also with kaufman aluminum heads, Tiger heads, Canted valve heads, Edelbrock heads, and Ace brewer at Pacific Performance racing keeps making some great producks such as intakes, windage trays, etc etc. Also They are making Tri Power intakes, Dual quads, and alot of great 4 bbl intakes. It couldn't be a better time for pontiacs!!!!! I'm loving it as I have 3 68 Birds and about 7 engines. But I am using a Desoto Hemi for my Whippet hotrod.
