Help, I'm thinking about buying a '56 Buick Special - has a 322 - I don't know anything about Nail Heads - what should I be aware of - seller already has mention about fuel pump vapor locking because they work off of va***m - what else - engine has been rebuilt - don't know any details -also has a automatic dynoflow - what should I know about it ---Thanks guys
I don't think the vapor lock is caused because the fuel pump is vacuum operated. There are probably other issues there. That said, nailheads are wonderful engines. There are dozens of threads on the HAMB extolling their beauty, power, and ability to re-grow hair. They are powerful, competent, reliable engines with a ton of torque, charisma and history. Buy the car or you're a weenie. I love my 55 Century. The Dynaflow is another story-but there are adapters. Don't let that keep you from snagging the car.
yeah, the dynaflow is a turd but the were turbo style trans that buick made in the 60s and as belair said, there are adapters available for popular stuff, but nailheads are torque monsters. Parts are a bit pricey, but if it is a good running motor, run it!
I had vapor lock issues with my buick. I installed an electric fuel pump and havent had any issues since. Like belair said, the nailhead is reliable and powerful. Great car. Dont snooze on picking up the Special.
