I took my car down to bare metal, so I sprayed it with etching primer. Its a lot glossier than the 2k primer I am use to. So should I knock it down with some 80 grit before I use regular primer over it or do you think it is fine as is?
etching primer shouldnt be glossy.. did you spray it too "wet".. you shouldnt have to sand etching primer before applying regular 2k primer
Do you mean a sheen rather than gloss? If you feel you need to scuff it up, use some scotch brite. 80 grit will tear it up.....
it definately has a sheen. I probably had the pressure up to high. If I scothbrite it will I be in good shape to shoot over it? sorry if its a dumb question im new to the painting thing.
I am with this answer 100%... + scuff when in doubt.... As long as you dont sand the primer off I am of the opinion that you just cant scuff too much.... not so much that it will hurt you anyway.
Normally you would need to prime over etch prime in 30min up to a few hours max. (this is for a wet on wet application). Since it has been longer than that you will need to scuff sand with a Red Scotchbrite.
I agree with the scotch brite totally,i done this several times and it works like a charm.Smooth as a babies bottom!!!
The etch primer how ever should be sprayed as a light coat.. not soaked.. it always stays soft.. I think its designed to bite the metal.. and the primer to bite the zinc. as mentioned.. A red scotch brite will give it some tooth for better adhesion.. Theres so many different options and how toos in products.. and the applications sometimes are different..
True, kinda... If you read the tech sheets, many primers require a certain amount of film build to be effective. Scuffing off too much couold prove early failure so just be aware.
