what can you tell me about this thing? the axles that came with it have 12 splines, the bells are 1940? the center is a NOS piece, fully loaded....and of course its magnesium. The axles wont work with the bells as they are for floating hubs....plan on changing the ends of the tubes for big Ford bearings...but then I need to figure out the axles, the yoke is 10 spline[IMG]

Don't cut the tubes man, they're too pretty. Might come in handy later on.
Big truck bells will fit straight on. Give Speedway Eng. a call, they have everything for this.

Champ Type 301 - not as desirable as the V8 Type 201 or even the Model A/Midget Type 101 but plenty strong. Torrance puts it as '60s or '70s I think.

if its not going in a race car,.What you have is a champ rear end with model A bells , there is no slip set up in it so every turn you make will be a wash out !!! sell it to some one for racing and you will have money to get one you can use with all good stuff on it , that thing will bring a very good price !!!! you will be able to buy a new one that will work .

  8. First question is what kind of differential do you have. If it is anything other than a spool you will be very lucky.

Hot Rod Works can help you with the axles but it will be expensive.

Quickchanges are not for the thin of bill fold.

Thanks skid, that is making sense....are the floater stubs a stock item or is it something I have to source from racers? had a 33 truck with the wide 5's but never messed with the hubs

As already posted you have a Halibrand champ rear end with the correct adapters to later Ford 35-48 passenger car axle tubes, They are installed incorrectly side to side on your rear, the tube hangers correctly point rearward and hook downward not upward, presumably done to lower the centerline of the car. The axles are early ford 3/4 ton truck and are not compatible with the axle snouts. As prior post you would have to cut the axle tube snouts of flush with the backing plate boss and add bolt on 3/4 ton floating adapters, even then you can get screwed up due to the different lengths of the 3/4 ton axles. This now turns into obtaining a bunch of stock car parts to complete the assembly. Your next option, you can cut the axle snouts off and add late model bearing ends and get a special set of axles made up, all require machine work and additional expense.

The biggest down side to this unit is that it is rather large and probably has a locked spool center section that makes regular driving a new experience, especially in the rain. This really requires a differential to work safely on the street. The biggest problem here is determining the carrier bearing spacing to find a differential that will work.

As it stands right now you should take it apart and see what exactly you have. It is usable but will require additional parts to make it streetable. If you blow it apart take a couple of pictures and post like you did here it will be easier to give you some direction that may allow you to use this rear, as it sets right now you have a nice pile of parts.

The goal here is to make a working rear end for now, I've welded spider gears before, sure its a suck ride sliding around the streets, but for now I would like it complete rolling, and ready to go...looks like I need to find those hubs, or pony up for axles with big ford bearings

Aha - a spool, as suspected - looks like your going to be spending some $eriou$ money on a differential and axles to get that puppy to run decently on the street

  15. Someone mentioned Speedway Engineering. Good call. They can set it up with a posi, and life will be good. Had a rear end exactly like that one in my roadster in the 60's. Drove it on the street 'cause I didn't know any better. Wouldn't want the hassle now.

Where do you find the flange that bolts to 4 hole backing plate bolt holes?

This is a complete hub and drum on a Champ rear. IMO it says race car, can't beat that look. Good for the dirt track and drag racing in the 60's.

The stock 3/4--1 ton hubs were about like that..but all iron. Look like each hub contains enough iron to make 2 modern cars. That one is I think a hub affixed to an altered Buick drum...hub looks like stock iron kinda! They were available in aluminum of course to kill off unsprung weight. Probably one of those things with truck iron tubes and drums would be too heavy to use in a light racecar. I used to stop and look around at the home of a roundy-round racer in Pennsylvania when I was in college, staring at the beautiful, expensive debris...stacks of $$$ aluminum hubs, magnesium wheels, neat castings of all sorts, all junk from the use in contact sports. I was awed...just one of those magnesium wheels that he seemed to destroy every weekend would have been my life savings for about the next six lifetimes.

I have a couple spare hubs too, but i'm gunna keep 'em for a future project, but i also have a pair of the long unusable bell of the truck rear that could be cut off and used too. and I'm about ready to scrap them

Also i have a set of v-8 bells converted to floaters that might work too

Saw your extended post pictures, well that is a spool. Now you can possibly swap this out by installing your ring gear on the differential from a 40-52 3/4 ton truck rear axle and get some clearance by removing some of the case reinforcement web. This will let you run the 12 spline axles but you will still have to figure out the wheel hub side of the axles. Post 21 and 24 show you all the parts for this. Post number 26 said that he had some converted bells so you guys might want to be pen pals.
