OK, I realize that this is a pretty simple question to answer......IF you have done it before.....but I haven't, and just want a little info on how to change the freeze plugs in the Cad 350 (Olds block) in my '49 Cad. Will I have to remove the exhaust manifolds? I'm still getting over a total knee replacement, and can't quite climb around or under the car as of yet, so I am just in the planning stage. Thanks for any info.
I had a hole in a freze plug behind a motor mount. I dug it out and replaced with a rubber expanding plug. worked great.
All of them? Usually in a given situation there will be a few that are damn near impossible to get to, and one or two that you can't. Has it been sitting for a long time or what? If so it'd be best to pull the motor so you can get them all out and then flush all that scaly **** out that's gonna plug your radiator if you don't.
I have nothing specific to your engine but a friend had a freeze plug tool for driving them in. It made the job much easier. Of course it was done on a lift where we could get a good swing at the tool. Not as easy on jack stands.
I had one rust and leak in my 283 under the motor mount....I managed to jack up engine remove it and replace with a br*** one....then about 2 months later; another one leaked.....replaced it....then a couple weeks later yet another one started to leak! I said screw it and pulled the engine, popped them all out, drained the engine block, replaced them with br***, used Distilled water , Prestone Antifreeze, Prestone Rust Inhibitor. There is a cool video on YouTube on changing them....maybe an Aussie showing ya how.
Just got the motor back in my car after replacing a frost plug. Actually replaced them all, cleaned, degreased and painted the motor too. Used large socket that fit inside of plug to drive in, with a little sealer on each one. I had never done it before either, piece of cake. Good Luck...
I'll get flamed for this but..... Dump in a bottle of Bars Leak and drive it. When the knee gets better pull the motor and replace the plugs with br***. I've used Bars leak racing with leaky heads (valve spring pockets) and never had a problem with a plugged radiator or coolant circulation. It's great stuff.
