hey everyone im shawn im restoring a 1969 chevy corvair its in a bit of rough shape but it my first OLD car (lol) if there any suggestions on what i should do write to me and ill see if i like that idea.. thank you for taking your time to read this hope to hear from someone soon
'69 is too new for us here but there are some with Corvairs. I just got rd of one myself, a '63. There are a decent # of websites out there, a google search should bring up a lot of good ones. I do think the later ones are easier to customize.
Well Maybe I better step in here.Youngyon is my 16 year old Grandson Shawn that lives with me.I got the 69 Corvair for the price the impound yard would have gotten for scrap 100$.Shawn took 1 look at it and begged me to let him "fix it up"Well now it's his classroom where he will be learning "car stuff"He works part time as a dishwasher and pays his own way as best he can it cost him close to 1000.00$ just to be able to have his lisense and he paid it all from his job he also pays his expenses like his car insurance himself.Shawn knows I'm on here every day so he thought some of you might like to know he's learning to fix "an old car" and he is doing the work himself.Like his Grandfather Shawn is also fighting some learening handicaps like dislexia, and ADD.Today he spent all day pulling the interior out so he can start repairing the floors.I know that his car is off topic but he didn't when he posted he "just wanted your friends(my) on the HAMB "to know I was helping him with his car.Ifelt kind of bad I had to tell him that it's OT here.
Maybe the 69 Vair is off topic..but Shawn you're an awesome kid..my son is 18 and I'd be as proud of you as I am of him..and as proud as your grand dad. What kind of condition ? 2 Dr or 4 ? Take a look at a Yenko Stinger..the body style is the same as the 1965..and your '69 Here's some pics http://images.google.com/images?q=yenko%20stinger&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-Address&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=ie7&rlz=1I7ADBS&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi You're in good company..This is Jay Leno's Yenko.. Good luck with the build. I'd be interested to see what you do.. Here's a site to check out..all about Corvairs http://www.corvaircorsa.com/
WORD! I've always wanted to do that. There was a dude down the street from me when I was growing up that had a 69 with a 327 in the back seat. Total sleeper, loved it. Good luck with it!-MIKE
Sounds to me like Shawn is a pretty lucky kid! He's got the "work ethic" thing going and you've got the "mentor thing" going, maybe there's still hope. The car may be O/T but I'd say your partnership is spot on!
if you're into traditional lowriders...start searching the Los Boulevardos forums...some killer Corvairs have been done...did I just really say that. haha
check http://www.corvairunderground.com and download their catalogs. so much info! find a chilton manual for the engine and drivetrain work. parts are dirt cheap. and don't forget NAPA, but know what you need, I discovered today their catalog is not always right. and have fun, corvairs are a blast!
I'll tell you the best info on a Corvair... have an extra fanbelt under the seat ,great' lil motor as long as that top fan keeps spinning.
I got a 65 with a lot of good body parts, glass, bumpers cheap. Same body style as 69. Let me know whatcha need.
Bought my first Corvair about 12 years ago. I'd say one thing I've learned is, don't get too excited about buying up used parts from vendors. Just keep looking, you can find a whole garage full of Corvair "junk" at next to nothing prices, if you're budget is tight. The 1969 is pretty special, seeing as they only built 6000 cars. The last half or so were hand assembled after the assembly line was shut down. Maybe you've been searching online already. You being on the east coast, the parts supplier would be Clarks Corvair, www.corvair.com The national club has online ads, and Virtual Vairs, where you can get questions answered, www.corvair.org There's a good forum at http://www.corvaircenter.com/ Good stuff here too, http://www.corvaircorsa.com/ Best luck, they're fun to drive.
Thank You I need to find an in with this kid and the Corvair seems to be it I'm not super savvy on Corvairs but I own one right now and have joined Bay State Corvair Club and visit a couple of the Corvair groups online.most of the lower 12 inches of the car needs patching anyone that has a passing interest in these cars will know what we need but I do have pics of the car but I don't want to create an issue with this thread by posting OT pics. The mods have let it stay and really it is all about helping the kid out he has had a rough life before moving in with me.If anyone is interested we (Shawn and I" can send pics of his car just PM or Email us.I don't want to do anything here to get this thread closed Shawn seems thrilled that you guys are showing an interest in him and his very first "build" Thanks to all that have offered encouragement to him Leon Shawns Grandpa
Well i'm a die hard Ford man, been one for 60+ yrs. But I had a thing for Corvairs, was a line mechanic for a while and made good money on them. If done right they will do a good job. and with todays seals they can be fixed so they don't leak oil. Engine is tough as nails, but GM pulled the plug instead of fixin the problems. When I went into the HVAC business, I ran 2 Corvans. They would go where they were pointed, and in Pgh, we had some real snows. They never let me down, and ran when nothing else would. You are doing what I did with my son. Had a customer that had a 62 cp, in a heated shop that set for years with no suspension. Had O rust, brought it home. Had another customer with a 64 110 hp with a 4sp and literally had no floors in the car. The engine had 54000 on it, and was sweet running. My son did a swap and ended up with a beautiful 62 Blue cp that was like the day it was made. Also his first car, and he learned a bunch. Best way to go, my hat goes off to you, and he won't be an problem child. Iceman
