I need to find a rear end for my '30 Plymouth sedan. It has to be pretty wide as the body is 58" at the widest point (& no fenders). What rear ends are some of you sedan owners using. What about wheel backspacing and maybe spacers to get the wheel out far enough from the body? Want to run 16 x 6 wheels and 750 - 16 tires.

i used a 28 ford pickup 9 inch rear end on my 29 ford sedan..i ran 17 inch wire wheels in the rear with 750 tires and worked fine..the brake drum in the rear end was larger in diameter than the inner hub of the wire wheel so i ran 2 inch spacers on each side..didnt have to for width but only for brake issues..al worked fine for me..i was also told that 78/79 ford trucks had the widest rear ends from backing plate to backing plate..i dont know if its true but thats what i heard...
i really dont know about the fenders i ran this car fenderless...but like i say i was told that a 78 and 79 ford truck 9 inch rear end was the widest one they made..so i would probably jus start with one of those if wide is what your after
I used a 9 inch from 74 Ford truck on my 30 Ford sedan. My sedan is 55 inches wide but spent a lot of its life upside down in a creek so mother nature could have made a difference of an inch or two.
I have a 9" out of a 79 f150 out back. it has 55 1/2 " inside sidewall measurement wih 235-15's on stock rims. the backing plates are at 57" I have a front axle out of a 46 chevy truck that is 61" flange to flange a rear axle from a 68-74 nova which is 60" flange to flange and a rear from a 70-81 firebird that is 61" flange to flange ford van might be wider than ford pickup but i don't have one to check
I guess you should preface this question with the further description, "channeling so deep rearend and wheel will be far above the wheel wells in the mid-upper quarter panel", so the width you're looking for is correlated to the upper body rather than the wheel wells. Having fenders or not only affects tires too tall or wide in a stock suspension/frame situation.
pasadenahotrod is correct...due to channeling the body, the wheel and TIRE will be above the wheel well. The widest point the tire needs to clear is where the fender would have atttached to the body. I was trying to find out who may have had this problem and what rear end or fix they used.
With the 74 truck 9 in rear end I could drop the body to the ground running 235/70/15s and still clear by a little.
the only way you will ever know for sure what will fit YOUR application is to do a mock up with the wheels/tires you want to use. put them where you want them to be and measure in between ..that's how wide a rear end you need
Hey askeever, i had the same problem you're having. Im just about done building my '30 Dodge. My body at its widest in the rear is 59" at the body line where fenders would attatch. I looked EVERYWHERE for a rear end for that damn thing. Did TONS of research too. What i ended up with was a full size 85 Chevy van rearend. Theyre right at 60"-61" between the backing plates which is the important measurement. Rear ends are actually measured from the flanges not the backing plates. I also used a set of 1" thick wheel adapters to make sure i had enough clearance. You need at least 1" between the body and tire for side to side movement. During my research i also found that a full size Dodge ram 1500 rearend will work. They are 61" inches between the backing plates. Problem is i couldnt find one around here worth the money and then i found the van rearend. Works great. Im running a set of 15 X 8 reverse smoothies with 3" of back spacing with Hurst 7.5" cheater slicks. Heres the site for the adapters. http://www.ezaccessory.com/Wheel_Adapters_s/25.htm
54chebby - thanks for the info..that's exactly what stuff I'm looking for! I was gonna shoot for 1 1/2" between body and tire. I've been searching all over trying to find rear end dimensions, and you can't find backing plate to backing plate dimensions. I was going to hit the wrecking yards this weekend with my tape measure, but wanted some idea what rear to start looking for. It sound easy to mock it up with tires and wheels first, but since I don't have the wheels yet and I can order them in any lug pattern I want, thought it woud be easier to get the rear first. This is one of those things you thought would be easy! NOT!
I thought it would be easy too. But it all worked out. I did ALOT of junk yard rear end measuring. Did alot of internet searching too. I actually found my rear at a local yard with tape measure in hand. It'll work out for you ! Try to find the chevy rear if possible. Parts are cheap. I did a complete brake redo on my rear from the drums to the wheel cylinders everything but the backing plates for under $200 Good luck !
