My 53 Plymouth: Opinion on Wheels?

Ok, everyone talked me out of the flat black. I will probably keep my 53's finish like it is now and just ride this summer and then do something on the finish this winter... Probably go back the original dark/medium Blue. What I would like to know is a couple things.....

1. Wheels: I have already ordered new Coker G78's with 2 3/4 WWs and was thinking that I am going to loose the factory caps and paint the steel wheels and run thin trim rings and spider caps or thin rings and long chrome lug nuts. What is everyones opinion on what the wheel color should be? I am thinking either Red or gloss black? What do you think? If someone could photoshop these on this car that would be great!

2. Top? Thinking down the road what do you guys think cutting the top on this car would look like? Say 2 1/2 or 3 in the front and 4-5 in the back? What are the options on front gl*** when you chop one without flat gl***? Anybody got any spare time to photoCHOP my car? Anybody ever seen a 53 or 54 Cambridge chopped?

 

i think it would look killer with the wide whites, NO trim rings and chrome lugs. maybe a small bullet (2" dia.) on the hub? with the wide whites, I dont think you need the rings.....theres enough going on already with the white. IMHO. cool car by the way. my pops used to drive a 54 savoy 2 door wagon.

Can you find any paint that's close to the body color? I wonder what it would look like with blue (body color) wheels (no trim rings or wheel covers), chrome nuts, ww, and lakes. I'm not sure about the blue wheels, though. But, it'd be worth a look. I like the chrome wheel covers in the above pics, though (with the ww and lakes).

 

Chrome wheels. Needs something to brighten it up a bit.

This is a moredoor that is a local with a chop. I am not a fan of chops on these rides. I think the c pillar shape can make a chop look a little strange.
Having said that....that Barris 53 is a sweetie.

BTW, lovely ride there. My 2c is a dark gunmetal grey metallic wheel with your wide whites and a bullet cap. I have gone with starbursts on my Soto, think it looks ok.......and yes, it will be low soon.

 

I wouldnt go with red wheels. Not with a blue car especially. Not unless your going for that red, white and blue look.

 

WOW! Thanks for all the photoshop work and ideas / comments! I like the black wheels AND the chrome ones... The chrome does brighten it up a bit! Any more ideas?

This is a great look for your Plymouth...and very inexpensive.

 

Another vote for this look...

 

Chromies for sure with the wide whites...NO shave & NO haircut, leave it alone.(but that's just me)

 

I dunno... that dang 1/4 gl*** is so long its like a 4 door.

Another vote for the chrome reverse. Enough detail and shine to pop.
If you really have to cut that body, give the roof a section, it thins the top and makes it look more modern without most people noticing what's done.

 

I vote for the chrome wheels and wide whites, 'very nice look on that car.

Could someone with Photoshop do me three more favors????

1. Do a black wheel with rings and spidercaps with car this color

2. Can you take this picture and change the car to a medium blue (original color) Not NAVY Blue, but not this light..... and leave the chrome wheels

3. Medium blue with black wheels, rings and spidercaps......

Since I was not around in the 50's are the chrome wheels something that would have been a period "custom" look?

 

Yes on the 50's period correct!

 

Late '50s - early '60s for the most part, especially with wide whites. Combine this with mild lowering and split pipes and you, my friend, are good to go.

One more thought..... How do you think it would look to paint the original wheels a light silver argent (ralley wheel silver) then add thin rings and either bullet push thru centers with chrome lugnuts or spider caps?

 

You are right to think about a darker colour - it´ll set the chrome off nicely. I´d go for a metallic too, since its a bit more "deluxe". That blue that the car is now isn´t really all that exciting of a colour TBH.

Few ideas for you...

 

Oh yes...this is the one. Add the lake pipes and it will be perfect.
