found a 300 1965 nailhead with 3 speed trans. Are they any good? Do the dress up items for 401-425's fit? Is this the ******* of the nailhead family to be be avoided at all costs?? thanks-
it's not a Nailhead. so the Nailhead stuff does not fit. 1st easy way to tell, if the distributor is in the front it is not a Nailhead.
Zman must hold the record for answering that question. They're not a particularly bad engine, but don't expect to find much in the way of speed equipment for it.
You need to go over here: http://www.buickperformancegroup.com ...and find Sean Etson. He's the performance guru for these engines. I believe he has a mid-60's Buick Special with a 300 that runs in the high 11's or low 12's or something. But as Z-man said, it ain't a nailhead.
the buick 300 is still a bad *** moter. that what i am running in my 27 t. not too much out there for speed parts i have been looking
The Hussy, owned by JeffreyJames, runs a 300. All I have to say is they have plenty of power for a lightweight car especially a 26 T like the Hussy has. Plenty good and different. ******Knuckles
Just thought I'd chime in on this one. I got a 1964 Buick 300 with the stock aluminum heads and intake 4bbl intake. From what info I can find this engine had factory 11:1 compression, 340 ft lb torque and 250 or so horsepower. In my mind a great starting point for any lightweight rod. I spent 100's of hours polishing the heads and intake and let me tell you it's a beautiful sight. As for speed parts there isn't a whole lot, but you can get Offy finned valve covers still from Summit. Also I bought a 2 carb adapter to put on top of the 4 bbl intake and will be running 2 holley 94's. I'd like to see if it will fit inside a stock 27 t roadster full fendered car without having to butcher the firewall. time will tell......But this is a beautiful engine and not one that you'll see everyday. And the aluminum shaves probably 75 lbs off the normal V8.
