How much oil does a standard th350 take for an oil change?i.e torque converter full and so on and how is the best way to check the level?................Cheers Marq
Just put a new pan on mine last week & used about 7litres to re fill, but i did use an aluminum pan which i think holds a little more than my old tin one.
Usually takes 4 quarts to refill after pulling the pan. To check the fluid, you need the engine running, go thru the gears with the brake on to get fluid into all the clutches, then put it back in park. Wipe the stick clean, put it in and pull out and look carefully to make sure where the level is (look on front and back of the stick). If the ****** is still cool, fill to the "add" mark, if it's hot (been driven a few miles) then it should be between add and full marks, but never over full. It's a good idea to "sneak up" on filling it by adding just a few ounces at a time so it doesn't get overfull.
I agree with Jim, about 4 quarts for a fluid and filter change. BTW, you can't drain any of the fluid in the converter, you are only changing a portion of the fluid when you dump the pan. To drain the converter you must remove it from the trans and even then you can not get it all out. If you are starting from fresh rebuild, put 1 quart in the converter before you put it on the input shaft. Make sure you seat it all the way so the pump drive slots engage. Level check is just what has been said, in park on level ground normal operating temp and with engine running.
Hmmmmm... I just did a filter change on my th350 and added 5 quarts and the fluid level isn't even registering on the dipstick yet. The engine was running and at operating temp. I did not go through any of the gears since I don't have brakes yet!
Checking in drive sounds a bit dangerous (knowing how well parking brakes work on most hot rods). Mopars used to have you check in neutral. I've never heard of checking in drive...although it would probably give very similar results to neutral or park. Most important is to have the engine running and run it through the gears first, and to consider the ****** temp.
I was always told to check it in gear, but then my 54 manual said to check it in neutral. I just got a th350 that has a delay befor it goes into reverse, how can i fix that? Thanks, Dan
Marq... If you have an empty converter it will take about 7qts. As far as checking it. If its a dry converter put 4 in. Run the car for about 30 sec and then add 2 more. Run the car. Go through the gears. P to R to N to D then back to P. Check the level. Not indicating? Add 1qt. Do it again until it reads full on the stick.
Dont forget, some people have larger ****** coolers, longer or bigger lines to them, so that may cause a difference in the readings.
