I have a 1953 Dodge pickup with a mid 70's Dodge 318. Recently I changed the intake and dropped the pan to change the gasket. After getting everything back together, and making a few adjustment she fired right up and was running strong. I backed her out of the driveway and put it in to drive and as soon as I touch the gas it starts to make a whining sound. Not a squeel but a whining sound that sounds like its comming from the rear bottom of the engine. When its in park or nuetral I can go to any RPM range and I dont hear it. As soon as I am in Drive(also manually shifiting through the gears) I hear it. I am so confused being that I only changed those two things and there are no leaks or smoking of any kind. If there is anyone that is good with engines and ******s in the Des Moines metro area and would be willing to take a look for maybe a case of beer or something let me know. I want to get this thing out on the highway already!

    Thanks
    JB

Any carb linkage/kickdown alterations when the intake was changed? Don't know much about ******s but maybe there's an adjustment to be made? Or do these even have a vacuum line?

I can't think of anything in particular that could make it whine ?
Does it sound like a power steering pump low on fluid ?

Get back under that thing and give the starter and dust cover a really thorough inspection for loose bolts or tweakage. Did you use a prybar to get the pan loose or did it come down easily?

Is the flex plate the old type or a newer one with crank position holes in an outer flange?

Not sure what flex plate it is, Is this something I could see just under the car?

Sorry not really an engine/trans guy so may take me a bit to understand everything.

The flexplate is the 13" (or so) disc that bolts up to the end of the crankshaft to which the torque converter attaches. It also has the ring gear that the starter engages. You can see it when you take off the dust cover.

Yes it was running great 3 days prior. No noise including the one Im trying to figure out. I think I will be jacking it up tonight or tomorrow to take a look at the flex plate.
