I found a 50' Buick in a barn that has been parked since 1970 and trying to crank the straight 8. I dropped the gas tank and cleaned it, cleaned the carb and have plenty of fuel to the motor but no fire. Replaced the points and condenser, plugs, everything but the wires, they look to be in good shape after going though all of them???? New coil and still no fire. It is a six volt system but I was under the impression that a twelve volt battery wouldn't be a problem. I know I run the chance of burning up the starter and generator but just want to hear it run. Is there anything that I am over looking? Maybe somebody could talk me through the way the car fires so i can refresh my steps?
make sure that you have a good resistor on there you can run it for a little while without the resistor
Hi! You should change the ignitioncoil to a 12 voltish. It will cause problems else if you attend to continiously use 12v. The starter is normally no problem, I run mine on 12 volt since many years. Try an extra jump wire between battery + and coil +. Then you should have spark when engine turns, If everything is ok in distributor area. Dont forget to take the jump wire off when engine have started, cause it cant be killed by key if still there. Dont know if you have the pedal to the metal-starter but in some cases when having keystart it steals all the power from the coil and give it to the starter. If so it only will give spark when you let the key go which means alomost never. Which might be considered as boring. good luck!
what fixed it? -I had a 50 did you have any problems with the pedal starter linkage adjustment ? -have fun with that car I still miss my sedanette-have some parts, dash parts, etc
like my daddy always said, "If you got compression, fuel, and spark she's got to run!" Have fun with that ol' straight 8 !!
