I was hoping someone could help out with a few questions.

Have just bought a 4 speed manual floor shift charger/valiant box that I would like to bolt up to a 318 for my Dodge project.I have been told that You can use a 3 speed bell housing with a little mod which will work fine?Does anyone have the correct bell housing out there or have any comments on a modification to suit. Thanks:confused:

the factory small block bell housings were aluminum from 68 -74 and had both the three speed and four speed bolt patterns. the o.d. four speed bell housings had a larger center hole for the bearing retainer.

Thanks Mate.So a three speed bell housing will be no good then due to the larger bearing size of the four speed.??

Any one know what my options are or where I can get hold of a 318 bell housing for the four speed box,Maybe Aussie???

    Thanks

the bell housing was the same for three speeds and four speeds from 68 through 74. in 76 when they started making the overdrive four speeds chrysler used a larger front bearing retainer. i have swapped bearing retaiers between regular four speeds and overdrive four speeds to fit the different size bell housing holes. the bearing retainers are available from mopar performance.

I have a '64 318. I went with a '76 3 speed auto and it bolted right on. good luck with the Poly

  7. I have a 64 Valiant 318 with a manual overdrive, I used a Aluminum bellhousing from a 72 340 Duster. Before the 4 speed I used the same bellhousing with my original 64 Three speed, then when I switch over to the overdrive manual I had the bearing retainer and bellhousing machined to match. Mopars bellhousings are usually set up for either a four speed or three speed...........the overdrive manuals bearing retainer is the only stumbling block, unless you find the trans and bellhousing together....or have them machined to match.....
