just happened to fall into a new project that has a ford 302 with a A.O.D. trans..

looking at the gennie and lokar websites Both companies make shifters for this application, however I don't think I want a shifter coming up outta the floor..

are other shifters are available for the ford aod???

    perhaps a cable shifter?

I'm new to the ford powerplants.. so forgive the otherwise simple questions.. thanks

    anyone have ideas???

Not a simple question at all. I've been into Fords forever, and do not understand hows and whys of the AOD TV cable, and its adjustment. What causes the OD in the AOD trans to fail when when the cable breaks, or is out of adjustment? I have seen AODs continue to operate as 3-speed automatics for years, after the OD has failed.
Trans gurus please help Sawzall...then I'll have some answers too...

    Two separate issues.

The shifter on my coupe uses a column shift and cable. In my roadster, I used the same linkage as when it had a C4 (column linkage), with a little adjustment on the threaded end. The lever is clocked a little different than the C4, so the spacing on the detents aren't just perfect, but work well enough to drive. I understand that Lokar makes a kit to adjust that, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

I use the throttle position cable setup from Lokar on both cars. Not too expensive, and not hard to install, although I did end up doing a little fabrication to mount it. Works well.

I was under the impression that the OD in an AOD was vacuum controlled. And lockup was controlled by a TV cable.
Can you use a column out of crown vic or the like?

There's two AODS, so you have to look ahead...one has L-D-OD, the other is L-2-D-OD, if you have the one with 3 selections, any 3speed shifter should work ok, if you have the 4 selection one, then you need to look further.

Also, FWIW, my AOD (from a '93 Cougar) has no vacuum to the ******, and I don't think the '94 Explorer I had, used vacuum either.

I had a AOD in my 29 Roadster and got a Locar shifter. It worked well but had to re set the shift pin alingment to work for me. REMEMBER the TV adjustment is critical on the AOD. Pressure is very important on that one. If I remember its 35 psi, but been a while, so check it out for sure. Ice man
