I'm considering ordering a set of Hurst Cheater Slicks for my 55 Chevy street/strip car. I like the nostalgia look and I know they'll fit, but the fact that their retreads concerns me. I'm looking for some pro or con opinions on them before I buy a set.

Do a search and I think you'll find that almost all of us who run them are happy with them.

I just pulled mine off the 55 Buick after about 8-9 years. I got mine from Ron Hurst before he sold the company. I only pulled them off because I have worn through the recp down to the original casing. No issues with the retread, many many miles on highway and around town, countless burnouts etc...
I wouldn't let the retread be your deciding factor.

I just bought a pair that look great. (car's not done)
My buddy has the slicks and the front runners on his coupe, one of the fronts developed a bubble under the recap??? he called hurst and they fixed it for nothin. They seem to stand behind there products.

  5. i have a set that are a couple of years old, and are coming apart! the "cap" is coming off i suppose. i was told to send them back, but they're not being replaced. i'm gonna buy some radir's, cause these are crap. some have had good luck, but i didn't

I've been using Hurst recaps since the sixties when Ron was in San Diego. Now running some 16" Hurst dirt track tires on Firestone Wilderness carcasses with nary a problem.

Thanks for the input. It sounds like most of you have been satisfied with them.

I have a pair of Hursts that have held up very well. They are GREAT street tires and they look really good. I have run both Hurst and Radir on the drag strip on the same day and on my car, that day, the Radirs performed much better than the Hursts. I may be a bit biased because the swap to a set of borrowed Radirs gained me and 2 mph and spot in the 100 mph club. Hurst makes a fine product at an affordable price, but I prefer the Radirs.

I love the looks of mine but the out of roundness made them difficult to "almost" balance and you can feel a wobble on the highway. They are recaps so I kind of expected those issues just not this severe.

Just have to wonder... have the guys with issues ever bothered to call and discuss the perceived problems, or do they just like to piss & moan...?

Excellent Tires and Cody at Hurst is a great guy.

  18. Get the white ones.

Folks have been running recaps for decades with more success than failure. I understand that they put a good product, but they are bound to have a bad one once in awhile; just like anything manufactured.

I wouldn't have a problem running them myself.

I have barely put 250 (to Rust Revival and back) miles on them, I am calling Cody on Monday, I am not pissing or moaning just answering the question and stating my 1/2" runout, 12 ounce tire balance (on 28 x 8.5 x 15) "perceived problems". I personally mounted tires for 7 years, watched the guy mount these, he spun the tire 90 and 180 degrees to try to correct the problems, no dice-> "perceived problems", I wish!

Anyone who needs any help is always welcome to call me "Cody" or Dad "Steve" the owners and manufacturer of Hurst Racing Tires at 503-656-1572 or PM or email ahrrubber@qwestoffice.net . We are here to help and we stand behind our product 100% and many of you HAMB members know that is true. We have an outstanding product and very seldom do we have issues. Never has there been any catastrophic failure of any of our tires.
Issues with balance or trueness is no better or worse than "Brand New Tires" and for the most part are over exaggerated , but if you feel you have a problem call me first and then send it back. I don't ask questions if you feel there is a problem. I want the tires on your car , that's the only way for success!

Have a nice Day and lets keep this tread going, I know there is alot of happy customers becuase the majority of my sales are word of mouth and of course the HAMB family.

beenm running mine for 2 years. I didnt bother to balance then since I dont hit the highway much and it would be rett. Its geared to low for that. I havent had an issue with them at all. Takes a couple extra second to heat them up then I was use to but I would buy another set without a second though.

I love my Hurst Cheater Slicks and NEVER tire of saying it.

The guy who mounted them for me was surprised how easily the balance and was able to get any weights on the inside of the assembly to not mess with the exterior look of the painted rims. Now there's tire guy who know his stuff.

Keep up the great work Cody!

Thank you Cody, I will be calling. My purpose wasn't to through you and your product under the bus, just answering the the post honestly about my "perceived problems" and a little frustrated.

  29. Matt nothing personal just struck me funny negativeMatt had negative comments. look like you have a real problem there. did they run flat or low pressure? I've had many problems with radial tires and low air.
